Inflammation in the nervous system is one of key features many neurodegenerative diseases. It increasingly being identified as a critical pathophysiological primitive mechanism associated with chronic diseases following traumatic brain injury (TBI). Phytochemicals have wide range clinical properties due to their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. Currently, there are few drugs available for treatment other than symptomatic relief. Numerous studies shown that plant-derived compounds, particular polyphenols, protect against various safe consumption. Polyphenols exert protective effects on TBI via restoration nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB), toll-like receptor-4 (TLR4), Nod-like receptor family proteins (NLRPs) pathways. In addition, these phytochemicals derivatives upregulate phosphatidylinositol-3-Kinase/Protein Kinase (PI3K/AKT) erythroid 2-related 2 (Nrf2) pathways, which functions modulating symptoms. There supporting evidence medicinal plants different models, though future trials needed clarify precise mechanisms polyphenolic compounds TBI.
