This review paper offers an overview of the history and future active inference—a unifying perspective on action perception. Active inference is based upon idea that sentient behavior depends our brains' implicit use internal models to predict, infer, direct action. Our focus conceptual roots development this theory (basic) sentience does not follow a rigid chronological narrative. We trace evolution from Helmholtzian ideas unconscious inference, through contemporary understanding In doing so, we touch related perspectives, neural underpinnings opportunities for development. Key steps in include formulation predictive coding theories neuronal message passing, sequential planning policy optimization, importance hierarchical (temporally) deep (i.e., generative or world) models. has been used account aspects anatomy neurophysiology, offer psychopathology terms aberrant precision control, unify extant psychological theories. anticipate further all these areas note exciting early work applying beyond neuroscience. suggests just biology, but robotics, machine learning, artificial intelligence.

Creating autonomous robots that can actively explore the environment, acquire knowledge and learn skills continuously is ultimate achievement envisioned in cognitive developmental robotics. Importantly, if aim to create develop through interactions with their learning processes should be based on physical social world manner of human development. Based this context, paper, we focus two concepts models predictive coding. Recently, have attracted renewed attention as a topic considerable interest artificial intelligence. Cognitive systems better predict future sensory observations optimize policies, i.e. controllers. Alternatively, neuroscience, coding proposes brain predicts its inputs adapts model own dynamics control behavior environment. Both ideas may considered underpinning development humans capable continual or lifelong learning. Although many studies been conducted robotics neurorobotics, relationship between model-based approaches AI has rarely discussed. Therefore, clarify definitions, relationships, status current research these topics, well missing pieces conjunction crucially related such free-energy principle active inference context Furthermore, outline frontiers challenges involved toward further integration robotics, creation real capabilities future.

A paradigmatic account may suffice to explain behavioral evolution in early Homo. We propose a parsimonious that (1) could particular, frequently-encountered, archeological outcome of behavior Homo — namely, the fashioning Paleolithic stone 'handaxe' from biological theoretic perspective informed by free energy principle (FEP); and (2) regards instances as postdictive or retrodictive, circumstantial corroboration. By dynamic planning, we refer to the ability of human brain infer and impose motor trajectories related cognitive decisions. A recent paradigm, active inference, brings fundamental insights into adaptation biological organisms, constantly striving minimize prediction errors restrict themselves life-compatible states. Over past years, many studies have shown how animal behaviors could be explained in terms inference - either as discrete decision-making or continuous control inspiring innovative solutions robotics artificial intelligence. Still, literature lacks a comprehensive outlook on effectively planning realistic actions changing environments. Setting ourselves goal modeling complex tasks such tool use, delve topic keeping mind two crucial aspects behavior: capacity understand exploit affordances for object manipulation, learn hierarchical interactions between self environment, including other agents. We start from simple unit gradually describe more advanced structures, comparing recently proposed design choices providing basic examples. This study distances itself traditional views centered neural networks reinforcement learning, points toward yet unexplored direction inference: hybrid representations models.

This paper presents an interpretation of stuttering behavior, based on the principles active inference framework. Stuttering is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by speech disfluencies such as repetitions, prolongations, and blocks. The inference, theory predictive processing sentient can be used to conceptualize disruption in perception-action cycling underlying production. proposed here posits that arises from aberrant sensory precision prediction error dynamics, inhibiting syllable initiation. Relevant this theory, two hypothesized mechanisms are proposed: (1) mistiming (2) excessive attentional focus. Both highlight role neural oscillations, error, hierarchical integration framework also explains contextual variability behaviors, including adaptation effects fluency-inducing conditions. Reframing synaptopathy integrates neurobiological, psychological, behavioral dimensions, suggesting disruptions precision-weighting mediated neuromodulatory systems. perspective provides unified account sets stage for innovative research therapeutic approaches.

Traumatic complete spinal cord injury (CSCI) leads to severe impairment of sensory-motor function, and patients often suffer from neuropsychological deficits such as anxiety, depression, cognitive deficits, which involve different brain functional modules. However, the alterations in modular organization interactions between these modules pediatric with CSCI remain unclear. In this study, a total 70 participants, including 34 36 healthy controls (HCs) aged 6 12 years, underwent whole-brain resting-state MRI. The networks were analyzed via graph theory approach based on 90-region Automated Anatomical Labeling (AAL 90) atlas, generating 90 × correlation matrix. Metrics for nodal, global, scales calculated evaluate network's topology. Between-group comparisons partial analysis performed. Compared HCs, exhibited significant decreases nodal metrics, particularly subcortical (SN) like bilateral thalamus. Besides, distribution core nodes changed, five newly added primarily located regions default mode network (DMN). For interactions, group presented increased connectivity within DMN attention (AN) but reduced SN, vision (VN), AN SN. Notably, participation coefficient (Pc) TPOmid.L (left temporal pole: middle gyrus) was positively correlated motor scores, suggesting its potential an indicator evaluating function patients. Additionally, demonstrated structure significantly lower modularity. These findings suggest that chiefly occur emotional cognition vision-associated regions, emphasizing importance focus their psychocognitive well-being providing evidence visual-feedback related rehabilitation strategies.
