A Commentary on The Evolution of Social Timing by Verga, Kotz and Ravignani (2023). (2023) delve into the fascinating world social timing across species provide suggestions how to advance our knowledge about temporal dynamics interaction. authors adopt a broad definition as mutual coordination behaviours among interacting agents. This notion is relevant in many different domains – from synchronous chirping bush crickets (e.g., Greenfield et al., 2017; Hartbauer & Römer, 2016) rhythmic musicians Zamm 2015, 2016; Wing 2014). Subsuming these diverse relevance under single umbrella term offers productive framework for targeted cross-species investigations incremental strides towards better understanding cognitive mechanisms, generative structures, evolutionary trajectories timing. We are enthusiastic this approach, commentary, we highlight three additional ways further: i) applying computational models one another, ii) taking role context account, iii) including developmental perspective.

Verga, Kotz, and Ravignani’s paper on “The evolution of social timing” [1] provides an elegant proposal into how sociality timing are interconnected ubiquitous in human nonhuman animal interactions, proposes a framework to investigate the why it is so fundamental animals. The authors outline some key mechanisms that support timing, such as interpersonal synchronization mutual adaptation, but do not go depth with respect fine-grained temporal properties underlying individual signals, which may lead different outcomes. Here we propose these understanding consequently embodied living species. We first summarize interactions argue at very core show can predict important consequences. Next, examine whether varying perceptions sociality, attribution agency, interaction parameters when embedded artificial agents (e.g., robots). Finally, dynamics lacking disembodied intelligence (AI), ChatGPT, ultimately reveals its lack sociality.

This commentary commends the contributions made by Verga, Kotz, and Ravignani in "The Evolution of Social Timing," particularly their cross-species framework for understanding temporal dynamics social interactions. While endorsing original work, introduces three salient considerations to augment existing framework. First, it highlights importance active sensing, stating that organisms, both human non-human, are not mere passive receptors but actively engage with environment. point challenges conventional paradigms cognitive science rely heavily on static laboratory settings. Second, underscores role multisensory integration timing. It argues effective interaction involves a complex array sensory data, which must be synthesized causal inference alignment contexts. Lastly, explores significance internal bodily states, like cardiac respiratory cycles, modulating We argue these might discernible external observers, dynamically influence Overall, enriches discourse timing advocating more nuanced, dynamic, embodied how organisms sense interact one another.
