The northwestern Barents Sea (NW-BS) is a highly productive region within the transitional zones of an Atlantic to Arctic-dominated marine ecosystem. steep latitudinal gradients in sea ice concentration, and Arctic Water, offer opportunity test hypotheses on physical drivers spatial temporal variability net primary production (NPP). However, quantifying NPP such large ocean can be challenging by lack situ measurements with high resolution, gaps remote sensing estimates due presence clouds ice, assumptions regarding depth distribution biomass. Without reliable data evaluate models, filling these numerical models limited model representation environment its about relationships between main limiting factors. Hence, framework Nansen Legacy Project, we combined measurements, sensing, simulations constrain phytoplankton NW-BS. was subdivided into Atlantic, Subarctic, subregions basis different phenology. In 2004 there significant regime change subregion that resulted step-increase tandem step-decrease concentration. neither experienced long term trends despite changes environment. Mixing driver simulated annual subregion, while light nutrients drove Subarctic subregions. multi-source estimate ranged 79–118 gC m−2 yr−1 74–82 19–47 Arctic. total NW-BS estimated 15 48 Tg C yr−1, which 15–50% needed sustain three most harvested fish species north 62°N (roughly 90 yr−1). This research shows importance continuing strive for better regional NPP.
