Marine biofouling is a major problem that contributes to the failure of man-made marine structures. Conventional antifouling coatings release heavy metal ions for antimicrobial purposes are no longer in line with today’s environmental issues. In this paper, layer-by-layer (LBL) self-assembled coating based on an addition reaction between polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and phenols anchor pyrogallic (PG) effect stainless steel surfaces presented. For purpose, three phenolics were selected, their effects compared. Field emission scanning electron microscopy, contact angle measurement, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) Fourier transform infrared analysis (FTIR) used thoroughly characterize LBLPGs, results showed superior homogeneity significant delamination. Simulated friction tests inhibited Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus), Escherichia coli (E. coli), Phaeodactylum tricornutum (P. tricornutum) by more than 90% reduced coefficient surface from 0.38 0.24, demonstrating resistance effects.

Antifouling coatings stand out as one of the highly efficient ways to mitigate surface contamination. Traditional antifouling have a major drawback: they rely on toxic and environmentally hazardous compounds. These substances not only lead ecological harm but also disrupt natural equilibrium ecosystems. Consequently, in recent years, eco-friendly bio-coatings emerged. This review focuses mechanisms processes underlying contaminant adhesion, laying solid foundation for grasping principles coating design. It further elaborates general strategies developing bio-based solutions, highlighting their potential across wide array applications. Finally, this carefully analyzes current challenges confronted by puts forward future development directions. Through comprehensive overview, we aim expand influence technologies, promote application marine medical fields, provide examples establishment environmental protection policies.

Marine biofouling presents numerous challenges, including increased drag, reduced efficiency, and ecological imbalance. This review an overview of recent advances in antifouling coatings.
