Abstract
Managing
the
complex
relationship
between
digitalization
and
sustainable
development
is
a
key
challenge
for
many
small
medium
sized
enterprises
(SMEs).
To
understand
strategies
of
forerunners
in
field
digital
platforms
platformization,
this
study
performs
cross‐case
analysis
three
sustainability‐oriented
SMEs
employing
multi‐sided
operating
sectors
(wholesale,
information
communication
technology,
construction)
Germany.
The
integrated
framework
draws
from
Belief‐Action‐Outcome
theory,
platform
strategies,
goals
(SDG).
findings
identify
four
platformization
exemplarily
specify
contributions
to
SDG
2,
7,
8,
9,
12,
13,
17.
proposed
socio‐eco‐technical
emphasizes
linkages
an
employed
strategy
(technical
system),
corporate
culture
(social
stakeholders
SDGs
(ecological
system).
A
seven‐step
approach
motivate
facilitate
continuous
improvement
sustainability
SMEs.

TWIN TRANSITION — A LITERATURE ANALYSIS OF THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN TWO MEGATRENDS AND THE ROLE OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

Sustainability
and
digitalisation
can
be
considered
as
two
megatrends
that
force
companies
to
innovate
in
order
remain
competitive.
The
twin
transition
circumscribes
the
parallelism
of
these
megatrends,
with
aim
achieving
a
synergistic
combination.
However,
date,
there
is
lack
scientific
evidence
on
relationship
between
sustainability
role
for
companies.
Therefore,
this
article
presents
systematic
literature
review
following
PRISMA
methodology
analyse
how
concept
currently
understood,
transitions
are
related,
which
organisational,
external,
technological
contextual
factors
influence
On
level,
we
put
special
emphasis
impact
artificial
intelligence
(AI)
transition,
since
it
may
significantly
interplay
sustainability.
Our
findings,
derived
from
70
publications,
reveal
(i)
social
dimension
mostly
underrepresented
discussion,
(ii)
positive
digital
sustainable
much
more
evidence-based
than
vice
versa,
(iii)
establishing
right
capabilities,
methods,
competences
essential
drive
companies,
(iv)
indirect,
ecological
aspects
AI,
well
direct
negative
aspects,
predominantly
discussed,
but
without
addressing
important
aspects.
Finally,
based
review,
propose
new
definition
term
transition.
Future
research
needed
reduce
ambivalence
provide
profound
picture
assumed
relations.
