Here, we present a facile and robust method for living cationic polymerization using zinc wire as catalyst precursor. Well-defined poly(vinyl ether)s with various molecular weights narrow weight distributions (Đ < 1.10) can be achieved at room temperature. Excellent characteristics were observed in kinetic chain extension experiments. Mechanistic investigations revealed that the was catalyzed by situ generation of trace ions, which is key to under mild conditions. The utilization offers several advantages, including reusability, easy separation low metal residue. Furthermore, extended application this continuous flow polymerization, opening up promising avenue scalable efficient industrial production

Cyclic ketene acetals (CKAs) are among the most well-studied monomers for radical ring-opening polymerization (rROP). However, ring-retaining side reactions and low reactivities in homopolymerization copolymerization remain significant challenges existing CKAs. Here, we report that a class of monosaccharide CKAs can be facilely prepared from short scalable synthetic route undergo quantitative, regiospecific, stereoselective rROP. NMR analyses degradation experiments revealed reaction mechanism involving propagating at C2 position pyranose with different monosaccharides exhibiting distinct stereoselectivity addition monomer. Furthermore, maleimide was found to improve incorporation efficiency CKA vinyl produced unique degradable terpolymers carbohydrate motifs polymer backbone.

In recent times, the evolution of cationic polymerization has taken a multidirectional approach, with development reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization. contrast to conventional methods, which were typically carried out under inert atmospheres and low temperatures, various novel techniques have been developed where reactions are in open air, operate at room temperature, cost-effective, environmentally friendly. Besides, several external stimuli, such as heat, light, chemicals, electrical potential, etc. employed activate control process. It also enables combination other methods single reaction vessel, eliminating necessity for isolation purification during intermediate steps. addition, significant advancements made through modifications catalyst systems, resulting polymers an exceptionally high level stereoregularity. Cellulose serves as a sustainable biomaterial for wide range of applications in biotechnology and materials science. While chemical enzymatic glycan assembly methods have been developed to access modest quantities synthetic cellulose structure-property studies, polymerization strategies scalable well-controlled syntheses remain underdeveloped. Here, we report the synthesis precision via living cationic ring-opening (CROP) glucose 1,2,4-orthopivalates. In presence dibutyl phosphate an initiator triflic acid catalyst, with molecular weights, defined chain-end groups, excellent regio- stereospecificity was readily prepared. We further demonstrated utility this method through native d-cellulose rare l-cellulose.
