Psychomotor activity stands out as a crucial symptom in characterizing behaviors associated with depression. This study aims to explore the potential of actigraphy tool for digital phenotyping symptoms psychomotor agitation and retardation, which are clinically challenging dimensions capture, patients diagnosed major depressive episode (MDE) according DSM-5 criteria. We compared rest-activity circadian rhythm biomarkers measured by Motion Watch 8 between 58 (78.4%) MDE retardation (PMR), 16 (21.6%) (PMA), Actigraphy allowed objectively report PMA through heightened over 24-h period, while PMR manifests reduced during most active 10 h. Lower (RAR) amplitude was accompanied increased irregularities intra- inter-day rhythms. Interestingly, emerges an objective measure characteristics rest periods, free from confounding effects sleep disturbances. Indeed, no differences disturbances were identified exhibiting those displaying PMR. Digital may aid distinguishing allowing more precise characterization depression phenotype. When integrated clinical assessment, measurements could offer additional insights into rhythms alongside subjective assessments hold augment existing decision-making processes psychiatry.

Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a highly prevalent mental with devastating consequences that often first manifest during adolescence. Anhedonia has emerged as one of the most promising symptoms adolescent MDD, which means longer time to remission, fewer depression-free days, and also increased risk suicide ideas or actions. Research shown at least two-thirds depressed adolescents have significant sleep-onset sleep-maintenance problems. However, association between sleep anhedonia, potential mediators are less understood.
