Inspired by the vast potential of microalgae in bioeconomy and numerous applications benefits associated with their cultivation, a multitude pilot- industrial-scale production systems have been developed recent years. Both open closed cultivation successfully utilized, photo-bioreactors (PBRs) emerging as most versatile option for various products, enabling implementation advanced optimization strategies. Therefore, this short review provides comprehensive overview different PBR configurations applications, primarily large-scale but also laboratory-scale cultivation. A detailed discussion advantages, limitations, specific advancements each type is presented to aid researchers, engineers industry stakeholders selecting suitable design goals constraints. Moreover, highlights major challenges impeding full commercialization microalgal products forecasts future trends microalgae-based industry. The diverse sectors, including biofuels, nutraceuticals, pharmaceuticals, agriculture environmental remediation, underscore versatility significance relevant technologies.
