A large number of ground-source heat pump (GSHP) systems have been used in residential and commercial buildings throughout the world due to their attractive advantages high energy environmental performances. In particular, GSHPs constitute a proven renewable technology for space heating cooling. This paper provides detailed literature review primary aspects GSHP systems. These include technological characteristics HPs main types variations GSHPs, along with impact. Other addressed are integration other systems, as well optimal design control analysis. The important aspect system’s performance is also dealt through case studies barriers hindering further adoption buildings. Two challenges cost efficiency. Studies shown that can reach >>24% lower impact than air-source HPs, while today’s allow payback period installing <<5 years.
