Biomass is a renewable and carbon-neutral resource with good features for producing biofuels, biochemicals, biomaterials. Among the different technologies developed to date convert biomass into such commodities, hydrothermal conversion (HC) very appealing sustainable option, affording marketable gaseous (primarily containing H2, CO, CH4, CO2), liquid (biofuels, aqueous phase carbohydrates, inorganics), solid products (energy-dense biofuels (up 30 MJ/kg) excellent functionality strength). Given these prospects, this publication first-time puts together essential information on HC of lignocellulosic algal biomasses covering all steps involved. Particularly, work reports comments most important properties (e.g., physiochemical fuel properties) from holistic practical perspective. It also gathers vital addressing selecting using downstream/upgrading processes reaction (HHV up 46 MJ/kg), biochemicals (yield >90 %), biomaterials (great surface area 3600 m2/g).
