Carbon-based aerogels have garnered significant attention for CO2 capture owing to their low-cost precursors, tunable structures, and high porosity. Their performance in adsorption is intricately linked microstructural textural features, including pore size distribution, surface area, chemistry. Micropores (<2 nm) are particularly effective due compatibility with molecules, while functional groups enhance through hydrogen bonding electrostatic interactions. Strategic design approaches focused on tailoring these properties optimize uptake under realistic conditions. This review provides a comprehensive overview of recent advancements the structural engineering carbon aerogels, emphasizing role hierarchical porosity heteroatom doping (nitrogen, oxygen, sulfur, etc.) enhancing capacity selectivity. Experimental theoretical studies highlighted how synergistic control microstructure chemistry leads superior performance. Furthermore, this identifies current challenges, such as limited stability insufficient mechanistic understanding, which hinder further progress. Future research directions proposed, advanced architecture control, group engineering, integration situ characterization techniques. Overall, serves guide rational next-generation carbon-based tailored efficient scalable technologies.
