The green energy transition is aimed at mitigating the impact of climate change. Yet, current emphasis on 'green' narrowly centred around decarbonisation, or CO2 reduction, often side-lining roles other gases, such as sulphur hexafluoride (SF6) and PCF-14 (CF4), which have a respective 24,300- 7380-times higher global warming potential than time horizon century. In addition, any complex affair that simultaneously impacts environmental, economic social systems, with significant system-level interactions. For example, material requirement for renewable known to be substantial, factor 15 times greater natural gas-based offshore wind generation, almost 7 solar. resulting increased competition materials reducing appetite collaboration. capacity deploy technology participate in change mitigation geographically variable no single solution universally viable. This study examines an expanded definition proposes beyond-decarbonisation approach more comprehensive globally inclusive, pursuit sustainable transition. diversity our promises advantages heightened collaboration, diminished geopolitical tension, improved access, market opportunities, socio-environmental co-benefits. Strategies pivotal this involve understanding role carbon-based systems transition, amplifying resources, augmenting cross-sector efficiency, implementing effective carbon markets, integrating nature-based well removal technologies. Moreover, it imperative implement all-cost all-benefit monitoring evaluation optimise existing decarbonisation methods systematically. could entail use composite metrics normalise gain against economic, environmental metrics. Addressing societal apprehensions requires focus pragmatic fair outcomes, stability, impacts, developmental objectives, public engagement, recognition enterprises. Potential carbon neutrality of the global trucking, shipping and aviation sectors by 2050 could be achieved substituting fossil fuels with renewable hydrogen synthetic fuels. To investigate economic impact fuel substitution over time, a holistic cost model is developed applied to three case studies in Norway, an early adopter carbon-neutral freight transport. The covers value chains from local electricity production (hydrogen, ammonia, Fischer–Tropsch e-fuel) consumption for long-haul short-sea mid-haul aviation. estimates are internally consistent allow cross-mode cross-fuel comparisons that set this work apart previous more narrowly focused on given transport mode or fuel. contains 150 techno-economic parameters identify which components along drive levelized costs. This paper finds reduction potential 41% 68% until 2050, but will suffer asymmetric disadvantages. Fuel most expensive shipping, followed trucking. Cost developments electricity, direct air capture carbon, vehicle expenses, fuel-related payload losses significant drivers.

In developing countries like Ghana, the conversion of waste into energy is gaining greater interest among policy makers and researchers. The present study investigates feasibility producing electricity and/or fuels from a hybrid waste-to-energy pilot plant located in Ashanti Region Ghana. integrates three technologies: anaerobic digestion, pyrolysis solar PV. has potential to produce both such as green hydrogen, refuse derived fuels, bio-compressed natural gas compost. Thus, this compares financial scenarios—generating generating alone alone—by modelling their output performance using RETSCREEN expert 6.0.7.55 Microsoft Excel 2019 softwares. results indicate that multiple products provide higher investment with Net Present Value excess EUR 13 million payback period 12 years compared electricity-only model. Also, converting also provides substantial benefits which can be explored. However, Levelized Cost Energy, ranging 0.3 0.68 EUR/kWh, far above average residential End User tariff. Overall, an important methodology for assessing future projects.

Renewable Energy Communities (RECs) are being deployed all around the World as a technically feasible solution to decreasing users' dependence on fossil fuels. Several demonstration facilities have shown their potential provide final consumers with clean energy and associated environmental benefits. However, economic evaluation of these systems whole set is more complex than evaluating generation technologies individually, which can be considered barrier, it may complicated calculate its uncertainty precision. This paper deals this challenge adapts model for global Levelized Cost Electricity (LCOE) polygeneration microgrid characteristics typical REC, allowing assessment distribution LCOE depending input parameters. Thanks simple analytical formulation, proposed model, that used any combination (both renewable conventional), provides relevant information propagation in symbolic way avoids need run numerical simulations or make assumptions random A case study has been presented, considering small electrical REC photovoltaic plants micro wind turbines. Although defined market, representative example, evaluated according current Spanish Italian regulations, analyzed depth reference scientific literature. Results show uncertainties parameter estimates give rise very large scatter LCOE, pointing out quantities whose role crucial reliable estimate, among electricity purchase selling prices, yearly power load, self-consumption / virtually-shared rates stand out.

Bottom-up energy system models are often based on hourly time steps due to limited computational tractability or data availability. However, in order properly assess the rentability and reliability of systems by accounting for intermittent nature renewable sources, a higher level detail is necessary. This study reviews different methods increasing temporal resolutions series global horizontal direct normal irradiance solar energy, wind speed energy. The review shows that stochastic utilizing random sampling non-dimensional approaches most frequently employed downscaling. approach particularly simple, with applicability robust methodology good validation scores. increment speed, however, challenging its spatiotemporal complexity variance, especially accurate distribution profiles. Recently, researchers have mostly considered draw combination meteorological reanalysis fluctuations, which more than simple conventional interpolation methods. provides road map how downscaling quantify their effectiveness. Furthermore, potential future research areas also highlighted.

Remote locations and off-grid regions still rely mainly on diesel generators, despite the high operating costs greenhouse gas emissions. The exploitation of local renewable energy sources (RES) in combination with storage technologies can be a promising solution for sustainable electrification these areas. aim this work is to investigate potential decarbonizing remote islands Norway by installing RES-based systems hydrogen-battery storage. A national scale assessment presented: first, Norwegian are characterized classified according geographical location, number inhabitants, key services current system. Then, 138 suitable installation sites pinpointed through multiple-step sorting procedure, finally 10 reference identified as representative case studies. site-specific methodology applied estimate electrical load profiles all selected islands. An optimization framework then developed determine optimal system configuration that minimizes levelized cost electricity (LCOE) while ensuring reliable 100% power supply. LCOE range from 0.21 0.63 €/kWh clear linear correlation wind farm capacity factor observed (R2 equal 0.87). Hydrogen found crucial prevent oversizing RES generators batteries ensure long-term capacity. techno-economic feasibility alternative strategies also investigated: use not economically viable (0.87–1.04 €/kWh), profitability submarine cable connections highly dependent length annual consumption (0.14–1.47 €/kWh). Overall, cost-effectiveness Northern Europe easily assessed using correlations derived analysis.
