To meet climate targets, a global shift away from fossil fuels is essential. For sectors where electrification impractical, it crucial to find sustainable energy carriers. Renewable methanol widely considered promising fuel for powering heavy-duty applications like shipping, freight transport, agriculture, and industrial machines due its various production methods. While current technological efforts focus mainly on dual-fuel engines in future progress hinges single-fuel solutions using renewable achieve net-zero goals the sector. This review examines research status of technologies enabling as sole applications. Three main categories emerged literature: spark-ignition, compression-ignition, pre-chamber systems. Each concept’s operational principles characteristics regarding efficiency, stability, emissions were analyzed. Spark-ignition concepts are proven cost-effective solution with high maturity. However, they face limitations knock issues, restricting power output larger bore sizes. Compression-ignition inherently do not suffer end-gas autoignition, but encounter challenges related ignitability low cetane number methanol. Nonetheless, methods achieving autoignition exist. obtain stable combustion at all load points, combination techniques will be required. Pre-chamber technology, despite lower maturity, holds promise extending limit enhancing efficiency by acting distributed ignition source. Furthermore, mixing-controlled show potential eliminating associated size limitations. The concludes comparing each technology identifying gaps work.
