Global plastic production is estimated to be 400 million tonnes per annum, with ~ 5.25 trillion fragments floating in our oceans. Microplastics (< 5 mm) have the potential disproportionately accumulate and become trapped mangroves seagrass meadows, creating 'sinks'. This concerning as these ecosystems are of great ecological economic importance, microplastics causing harm inhabiting flora fauna. However, accurately measuring microplastic abundance, comparing findings, determining impacts difficult due a lack standardised sampling protocols. Therefore, systematic literature review was completed currently adopted methods surface water sediment mangrove ecosystems. These were compared recommendations from existing governmental institutional groups first step standardising for future procedures seagrasses mangroves.

With the rapid growth of global plastic production, degradation microplastics (MPs) has received widespread attention, and search for efficient biodegradation pathways become a hot topic. The aim this study was to screen mangrove sediment surface water bacteria capable degrading polyethylene (PE) polypropylene (PP) MPs. In study, two strains PE-degrading PP-degrading candidate were obtained from mangrove, named
