The burden of the human immunodeficiency virus and acquired syndrome (HIV/AIDS) infection has transformed African continent into a major consumer antiretrovirals (ARVs) drugs. In addition to HIV burden, also high incidence tuberculosis (TB) been experiencing recurring outbreaks several other viral, bacterial, parasitic epidemic diseases. novel severe acute respiratory coronavirus 2 (SARS-COV-2 or Covid-19) pandemic outbreak is adding continent's infectious diseases as experts are predicting that it will be here for long time. One consequences these antiviral antibiotic compounds have become some most consumed pharmaceuticals on continent. Many drugs frequently detected in surface waters across Africa. There limited information available adverse effects mixtures different types aquatic environments fish reproduction. present study investigated ARV drug nevirapine (NVP - 1.48 3.74 μg/L) its mixture with sulfamethoxazole (3.68 trimethoprim (0.87 O. mossambicus gonads using histopathological endpoints biomarkers. (n = 52) were exposed 30 days static renewal system. Female (3.74 NVP – recorded higher ovary indices. Statistically significant differences found female indices between control (p 0.002) well 0.009). main observed changes ovaries increased vitellogenic oocyte atresia vacuolation interstitial tissue mixture. It evident presence antibiotics water triggered histopathology ovaries. abnormal rate atretic oocytes could result impaired

Abstract Wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) effluents can contain estrogenic chemicals, which potentially disrupt fish reproduction and development. The current study focused on the use of an estrogen‐responsive in vitro cell bioassay (T47D‐KBluc), to quantify total estrogenicity WWTP effluents. We tested a novel sample preparation method for T47D‐KBluc assay, using powdered media prepared with direct effluent. Results assay were compared induction estrogen receptor–regulated gene transcription male fathead minnows ( Pimephales promelas ) exposed same Effluent samples paired studies collected over course three months. According effluent ranged from 1.13 2.00 ng 17β‐estradiol (E2) equivalents/L. Corresponding vivo exposing 0, 10, 50, 100% dilutions demonstrated that exposure significantly increased hepatic vitellogenin (VTG) receptor α subunit transcripts relative controls. was also significant males 250 E2/L or 100 E2/L. results support conclusion contains activity, but there discrepancy between vitro– vivo–based E2 equivalent estimates. Our suggest is reasonable approach estimate wastewater Environ. Toxicol. Chem. 2011;30:439–445. © 2010 SETAC

Abstract A sensitive and simple method based on ultrasonication extraction with a hexane/acetone (2:1, v/v) mixture, followed by clean up of the extract solid‐phase (SPE) gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) detection, has been developed validated for analysis 20 estrogenic endocrine‐disrupting chemicals (EEDCs) including phenolic xenoestrogens, synthetic natural estrogens in river sediment. After purification, analytes are derivatised BSTFA/TMCS/pyridine (49:1:50, v/v/v) mixture quantified GC/MS. The GC/MS involves switching between electron ionisation (EI) chemical (CI); it also switches selected ion storage tandem mass detection. applicability demonstrated analysing extracts French sediments which bioanalytical tests ( vitro ) had already shown that they were impacted endocrine disrupters. biological contribution all products detected each sediment was compared to activity measured bioassays.
