Pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) are a unique group of emerging environmental contaminants, due to their inherent ability induce physiological effects in human at low doses. An increasing number studies has confirmed the presence various PPCPs different compartments, which raises concerns about potential adverse humans wildlife. Therefore, this article reviews current state-of-knowledge on freshwater aquatic environment. The risk posed by these contaminants is evaluated light persistence, bioaccumulation toxicity criteria. Available literature sources, transport degradation environment evaluated, followed comprehensive review reported concentrations PPCP groups (water, sediment biota) five continents. Finally, future perspectives for research discussed identified gaps knowledge.

Pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) which contain diverse organic groups, such as antibiotics, hormones, antimicrobial agents, synthetic musks, etc., have raised significant concerns in recently years for their persistent input potential threat to ecological environment human health. China is a large country with high production consumption of PPCPs its economic development population growth recent years. This may result PPCP contamination different environmental media China. review summarizes the current status media, including sewage, surface water, sludge, sediments, soil, wild animals, by PPCPs. The body burden adverse effects derived from are also evaluated. Based on this review, it has been concluded that more information aquatic wildlife well areas urgent. Pharmaceuticals have emerged as a major group of environmental contaminants over the past decade but relatively little is known about their occurrence in freshwaters compared to other pollutants. We present global-scale analysis presence 203 pharmaceuticals across 41 countries and show that contamination extensive due widespread consumption subsequent disposal rivers. There are clear regional biases current understanding with work outside North America, Europe, China, no within Africa. Within individual countries, research biased around small number populated provinces/states majority effort has focused upon just 14 compounds. Most adopted sampling techniques unlikely provide reliable representative data. This highlights locations where concentrations antibiotics, cardiovascular drugs, painkillers, contrast media, antiepileptic drugs been recorded well above thresholds cause toxic effects aquatic biota. Antibiotics have been extensively and effectively used in human veterinary medicines. Their benefits recognized agriculture, aquaculture, bee‐keeping, livestock as growth promoters. This paper collects information from several investigations on the sources occurrences of antibiotics natural artificial environmental systems. Several were reported for their water resources, effluent industries, sludge, manure, soil, plants, organisms across globe. Sorption, photo‐degradation, biodegradation, oxidation main elimination pathways these compounds discussed detail. The adverse effects pollutants also highlighted necessary suggestions made effective monitoring mitigating pollution, which may provide scope future research.
