This paper investigates the effectiveness of phenol derivatives removal from bird organisms via claws and remiges, performs a preliminary assessment usefulness these epidermal products for environmental biomonitoring estimating exposure levels. Concentrations bisphenol A (BPA) alkylphenols: 4-tert-octylphenol (4-t-OP) 4-nonylphenol (4-NP) were determined in remiges long-tailed ducks Clangula hyemalis razorbills Alca torda, obtained during by-catch winter period (2014-2016) Southern Baltic region. For razorbills, is permanent habitat, while are migratory stay only non-breeding season. Their replaced Arctic seas Siberia. The derivatives, depending on compound product, ranges 12 % to 34 %. Among compounds, both species, highest degree elimination was observed 4-NP (<0.1-656.0 ng.g-1 dw) as well (<0.1-338.6 dw). On other hand, least removed duck razorbill 4-t-OP. species at same level. However, concentrations found be statistically significantly higher compared those (p < 0.05). Comparison razorbill, moulted two different environments with levels pollution distances sources, indicated that Sea approximately 3 times more polluted than marine areas Russian Arctic. demonstrates potential use indicators derivatives.

In this study, we evaluated the suitability of body feathers, preen oil and plasma for estimation organohalogen compound (OHC) exposure in northern goshawk Accipiter gentilis nestlings (n = 37; 14 nests). addition, feathers received further examination concerning their potential to provide an integrated assessment (1) OHC exposure, (2) its dietary sources (carbon trophic position) (3) adrenal gland response (corticosterone). While tetrabromobisphenol A was not detected any sample, presence polychlorinated biphenyls, organochlorine pesticides, polybrominated diphenyl ethers hexabromocyclododecane (median: 23, 19, 1.6 3.5 ng g-1 respectively), 7.5, 6.2, 0.50 1.0 ww, respectively) 750, 600, 18 9.57 suggests analytical biomonitoring major OHCs three matrices. Furthermore, strong significant associations (0.20 ≤ R2 0.98; all P < 0.05) among concentrations tissues showed that reliably reflect circulating levels. Of proxies, δ13C source) most suitable predictor variation feather concentrations, while no relationships between δ15N (trophic were found. Finally, corticosterone related concentrations. This is first study evaluate a terrestrial bird prey as non-destructive tool jointly assess nestling ecophysiology ecotoxicology.

Abstract White stork nestlings can provide quantitative data on the quality of environment, as they are dependent their parents that locally foraged food. Blood was sampled from brachial vein ( n = 109) and sampling performed in parallel with ringing during breeding season 2020 five areas eastern Croatia: Lonjsko polje, Jelas Slavonski Brod–east, Podunavlje, Donje Podravlje. In present study, for first time Croatia, following enzymatic biomarkers were assessed white nestlings: activities acetylcholinesterase (AChE), carboxylesterase (CES), glutathione S‐transferase (GST), reductase (GR), well nonenzymatic biomarkers: levels (GSH) reactive oxygen species (ROS). All endpoints measured two blood fractions: plasma a postmitochondrial fraction (S9). Nestlings Podunavlje Podravlje, known intensive agriculture, showed lower AChE CES activity when compared to other investigated areas, indicating presence inhibitory xenobiotics. Higher oxidative stress observed an area surrounded by metal engineering industry, areas. Hence, this study shows impact pollutants surrounding metal, petroleum, agricultural industry might have nestlings, which often seen early‐warning signals.

White stork (Ciconia ciconia) nestlings can provide quantitative information on the quality of surrounding environment by indicating presence pollutants, as they depend locally foraged food. This study represents first comparison biomarkers in two fractions white nestling blood: plasma and S9 (the post-mitochondrial fraction). The aim this was to evaluate acetylcholinesterase (AChE), carboxylesterase (CES), glutathione S-transferase (GST), reductase (GR), well establish a novel fluorescence-based method for (GSH) reactive oxygen species (ROS) detection S9. Considering enzymatic biomarkers, lower variability detected only AChE, CES, GST, GR had Enzyme activity higher while Regarding method, GSH ROS, although reported S9, ROS plasma. present indicated valuable differences successfully establishing protocols biomarker measurement based variability, enzyme activity, fluorescence. For better understanding environmental effects nestlings' physiological condition, be measured
