Abstract Connectivity—the flows and exchanges of organisms, materials, energy within among watersheds—is a central paradigm in ecosystem science. Changes those connections have consequences for functioning water quality downstream upstream. Therefore, connectivity is cornerstone federal protection under the United States Clean Water Act (CWA). In present article, we review science connectivity, explain history changes CWA jurisdiction defining waters States, discuss implications US policy, highlight key steps to align that policy with The Sackett v. EPA (2023) Supreme Court decision significantly reduced wetlands headwaters, disregarding their larger, protected waterbodies. To fulfill goals restore maintain chemical, physical, biological integrity U.S. waters, Congress must amend act, fully recognizing multidimensional aquatic ecosystems ultimately incorporating these into ecosystem-level policy.

The hyporheic zone, i.e. the ecotone between surface water and groundwater, is a rarely studied freshwater ecosystem. Hyporheic taxa are often meiofaunal (<1 mm) in size difficult to identify based on morphology. Metabarcoding approaches promising for study of these environments taxa, but it yet unclear if commonly applied metabarcoding primers replication strategies can be used. In this study, we took sediment cores from two near natural upstream (NNU) ecologically improved downstream (EID) sites Boye catchment (Emscher River, Germany), their communities. We evaluated usability used, highly degenerate COI primer pair (BF2/BR2) tested how sequencing three PCR replicates per sample removing MOTUs present only one out impacts inferred community composition. A total 22,514 were detected, which 263 identified as Metazoa. Our results highlight gaps reference databases potential problems using studying samples containing high number non-metazoan taxa. Alpha diversity was higher EID showed similarity when compared NNU sites. Beta analyses that detected site greatly increased samples. Abstract More than one‐third of the world's rivers cease to flow and go dry on a periodic basis—so‐called intermittent rivers. The frequency duration intermittency in running waters are increasing due climate change water demands for human use. Intermittency effects stream biodiversity ecosystem functioning dramatic expected become increasingly prevalent alpine landscapes near future. This project used modified field sensors measure intermittency, temperature, origin (groundwater, precipitation, glacier) at high spatio‐temporal resolution throughout an fluvial network (Val Roseg, Switzerland). We continuously recorded presence 30 tributary streams validated sensor performance with field‐collected measures. Three different regimes were observed network, including periodically intermittent, seasonally permanently flowing streams. Twenty‐four (80% streams) dried least once during sampling period. Principal components analysis along generalized additive models showed low average temperature conductivity (groundwater‐fed) prone permanent flow, whereas higher (glacier‐fed) typically had flow. proved precise simultaneously measuring river network. Overall, this approach provides effective way develop eco‐hydrological that examine riverine networks.

Stream water quality assessments are conducted by analysing invertebrate communities as a biological element (BQE). In Denmark, of streams often estimated according to the Danish Fauna Index (DSFI). The conventional DSFI method is time consuming and requires highly specialized expertise for species identification relevant indicator invertebrates. Furthermore, indicators may be hampered differences in, or lack of, developmental stages due damages during sampling process. Metabarcoding has potential overcome challenges associated with morphology-based identification. Using high-throughput DNA sequencing, metabarcoding invertebrates collected from stream provides an alternative taxonomic experts. present study applies using universal primers targeting mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase I (COI) gene determine qualities. obtained community profiles were compared Multivariate data analysis sequences resulted in distinct clusters units, which reflected defined DSFI. conclusion, supports knowledge that efficient BQE assessment. sequencing provided unique fingerprint studied was successful describing quality.

Abstract Looking across a landscape, river networks appear deceptively static. However, flowing streams expand and contract following ever-changing hydrological conditions of the surrounding environment. Despite ecological biogeochemical value rivers with discontinuous flow, deciphering temporary nature quantifying their extent remains challenging. Using unique observational dataset spanning diverse geomorphoclimatic settings, we demonstrate existence general hierarchical structuring network dynamics. Specifically, stream activation follows fixed repeatable sequence, in which least persistent sections activate only when most ones are already flowing. This phenomenon not facilitates monitoring activities, but enables development mathematical framework that elucidates how climate drives temporal variations active length. As gets drier, average fraction decreases while its relative variability increases. Our study provides novel conceptual basis for characterizing impacts.

In these times of strong pressure on aquatic ecosystems and water resources due to climate change abstraction, intermittent rivers ephemeral streams (IRES) (rivers that periodically cease flow and/or dry) have become valuable assets. Indeed, not only do they supply but also offer services for humanity. Despite a growing recognition towards IRES, information assessing their ecosystem (ES) remains scarce. first step, an international interdisciplinary group researchers developed methodological framework acknowledge ES provided by IRES using 109 indicators. A subset selected indicators was then applied two case studies: the Rio Seco in Algarve (Portugal) Giofyros River Crete (Greece). This paper discusses applicability indicators, including temporal spatial variability regimes. Abstract Ecosystems experience natural disturbances and anthropogenic impacts that affect biological communities ecological processes. When disturbance modifies impacts, current widely used bioassessment metrics can prevent accurate assessment of quality.
