Abstract. Hydro-meteorological risks due to natural hazards such as severe floods, storm surges, landslides and droughts are causing impacts on different sectors of society. Such expected become worse given projected changes in climate, degradation ecosystems, population growth urbanisation. In this respect, nature-based solutions (NBSs) have emerged effective means respond challenges. A NBS is a term used for innovative that based processes ecosystems solve types societal environmental The present paper provides critical review the literature concerning NBSs hydro-meteorological risk reduction identifies current knowledge gaps future research prospects. There has been considerable scientific publications topic, with more significant rise taking place from 2007 onwards. Hence, process presented starts by sourcing 1608 articles Scopus 1431 Web Science. full analysis was performed 146 articles. confirmed numerous advancements area achieved date. These already proven be valuable providing sustainable, cost-effective, multi-purpose flexible reduction. However, there still many areas where further demonstration needed order promote their upscaling replication make them mainstream solutions.

Nature-based solutions (NBS) are increasingly recognized as a valid alternative to grey infrastructures - i.e. hard, human-engineered structures measures for reducing climate-related risks. Increasing evidences demonstrated that NBS can reduce risks people and property effectively traditional infrastructures, but potentially offering many additional benefits, e.g. improving the natural habitat wildlife, enhancing water air quality, socio-cultural conditions of communities. The growing attention on NBS, triggered an increasing interest in developing integrated multi-disciplinary frameworks assessing effectiveness accounting co-benefits production. Starting from analysis existing frameworks, this work claims more direct engagement stakeholders beneficiaries assessment framework. This aims at demonstrating differences perception valuation might lead trade-offs and, thus, potential conflicts. An innovative methodology using quasi-dynamic Fuzzy Cognitive Map approach based multiple-time-steps was developed order assess effectiveness, detect analyze among due perception. implemented Lower Danube case study. trade-off shows they quite low short term. Evapotranspiration (ET) is a viable runoff reduction mechanism and an important player in the hydrologic cycle of vegetated green stormwater infrastructure (GSI). As dynamic process, ET dependent on both meteorological factors (e.g., rainfall characteristics, relative humidity, air temperature) GSI properties soil media type). To improve for reduction, methods should consider infiltration processes concurrently. Two methods, simple, are reviewed discussed herein. The simple method requires minimal input information compared to more continuous simulation method; however yields values similar field observations. Green infrastructure is an increasingly popular urban sustainability strategy, widely promoted for its ability to provide multiple benefits. We examined 120 planning documents from 19 U.S. cities identify if and how the stated benefits that use within their rationales green programs (rationale statements) align with criteria used site at neighborhood scale (siting statements). Our findings suggest many of desired in lack corresponding specific siting criteria. This was particularly evident rationale statements concerning social cultural ecosystem services, seemingly because certain benefits, especially those related stormwater management, are prioritized over other services. While remain a dominant analyzed, including cohesion, biodiversity were dominated by available locations, logistical considerations. These indicate large-scale misalignment between multifunctional ideal procedures implement programs. conclude discussion processes can be elaborated deliver infrastructure.
