Abstract Biochar shows significant potential to serve as a globally applicable material remediate water and soil owing the extensive availability of feedstocks conducive physio-chemical surface characteristics. This review aims highlight biochar production technologies, characteristics biochar, latest advancements in immobilizing eliminating heavy metal ions organic pollutants water. Pyrolysis temperature, heat transfer rate, residence time, type feedstock are critical influential parameters. Biochar’s efficacy managing contaminants relies on pore size distribution, groups, ion-exchange capacity. The molecular composition physical architecture may be crucial when practically applied soil. The current water crisis necessitates the development of new materials for wastewater treatment. A variety nanomaterials are continuously being investigated their potential as adsorbents environmental remediation. Researchers intend to develop a low-cost, simple, and sustainable material that can cater removal pollutants. Biochar derived from biowaste is candidate existing problem pollution. review focuses on various aspects biochar, such its sources, preparation methods, mechanism, applications treatment, regeneration. Compared with other adsorbents, biochar considered an environmentally friendly, sustainable, cost-effective substitute waste management, climate protection, soil improvement, etc. special properties porosity, surface area, charge, functional groups be easily modified by chemical resulting in improved adsorption properties. Therefore, view increasing pollution problems encountered researchers treating pollutants, great importance. This also highlights challenges prospective areas explored studied more detail future.
