Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) have been reported to be the main pharmaceutical class accumulated in seafood. Among them, ibuprofen (IBU) is of special concern as it used worldwide treat common pain, does not require a medical prescription, often taken high daily dose, and has cause potential adverse effects on aquatic organisms. IBU highly transformed into hydroxy- carboxy-metabolites and/or degradation products generated only after its administration but also during wastewater treatment or environment. These compounds can present environment at higher concentrations than toxicity. In this work, low-cost affordable routine analytical method was developed validated for first-time determination metabolites mussels. The based ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE), clean-up by dispersive solid-phase (d-SPE) liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. Box-Behnken experimental design optimisation better evaluate influence interactions UAE d-SPE variables. Extraction recoveries were range from 81 115%. Precision, expressed relative standard deviation, lower 7%. Method detection limits 0.1 1.9 ng g-1 dry weight. successfully applied wild

Nowadays, aquatic species face a variety of environmental risks associated with pharmaceutical consumption. More specifically, the increased number cancer patients has been accompanied by an consumption antineoplastic drugs, such as ifosfamide (IF) and cyclophosphamide (CP). These drugs have found in ecosystems, raising concerns about their impact, especially on estuarine species, marine waters are final recipients continental effluents. Simultaneously, predicted climatic changes, salinity shifts, may threaten organisms. Considering this, present research aims to investigate combined effects IF CP, shifts. For transcriptomic, biochemical, histopathological assessment was made using bivalve Mytilus galloprovincialis exposed for 28 days CP (500 ng/L), individually, at different levels (20, 30, 40). up-regulated metabolism-related gene cyp3a1, also affecting abcc gene, showing minimal impact highlighting importance these metabolic routes mussels. Salinity shifts affected transcription genes related apoptosis cell cycle growth, p53, well aerobic metabolism, antioxidant biotransformation mechanisms. findings indicate mussels' high adaptability osmotic stress. Under exposure low salinity, mussels exhibited cellular damage digestive gland tubules, revealing detrimental towards M. galloprovincialis, suggesting that slowdown activation mechanisms helped prevent oxidative control salinities. Overall, results reinforce need antineoplastics ecotoxicological risk assessment, under foreseen climate change scenarios.

The growing use of products containing rare earth elements (REEs) may lead to higher environmental emissions these elements, which can potentially enter aquatic systems. Praseodymium (Pr) and europium (Eu) are widely used REEs with various applications. However, their ecotoxicological impacts remain largely unexplored, poorly understood risks wildlife. Moreover, organisms also face stressors like salinity fluctuations, the nature interaction between variations contaminants is not yet clear. Therefore, this study aimed evaluate influence shifts on Pr Eu adult mussels sperm species Mytilus galloprovincialis after 28 days 30 min exposure, respectively. To do so, biochemical histopathological alterations were evaluated in adults, while physiological changes analysed sperm. Additionally, Integrated Biological Index (IBR) was calculated understand overall impact each treatment. results showed that most affected when exposed combination high element, altered behaviour defence mechanisms causing redox imbalance cellular damage. On other hand, demonstrated sensitivity specific REE-salinity combinations, particularly at lower salinity. These treatments elicited motility velocity: 20 led a production O2− decrease velocity, 40 resulted reduced an increase irregular movement. At both levels, exposure caused similar sensitivities adults sperm, reflected by comparable IBR scores. In contrast, induced greater than salinity, whereas reverse observed findings suggest reproductive success population dynamics could be modulated interactions levels REE pollution, highlighting need for further investigation into how factors interact. This offers valuable insights inform policymakers about potential contamination, emphasising importance implementing regulations developing strategies mitigate pollutants.

Neodymium (Nd) and dysprosium (Dy) are among the most commonly used rare earth elements (REEs) worldwide, leading to their increased concentrations in aquatic environments, with potential impacts on organisms. Additionally, organisms also subjected environmental stressors, such as salinity shifts, which can not only directly impact health but modulate of contaminants. Therefore, this study aimed evaluate effects Nd Dy adult mussels sperm species Mytilus galloprovincialis after 28 days 30 min exposure, respectively. Furthermore, assessed how shifts influence these elements. To end, histopathological biochemical alterations were evaluated adults, while physiological changes analyzed sperm. simplify data interpretation understand overall each treatment, Multidimensional Scaling Analysis (MDS) Integrated Biological Index (IBR) used. The MDS analysis identified three groups that consistent IBR score. first group, composed treatments at a 40, showed medium severe effects. second group was comprised control (30), presented lowest scores, indicating least impact. third included 20, associated impacts, presenting highest scores. results predominant factor study, lower being harmful. In addition, within level, element induced response species. This provides valuable information regarding interaction between REEs highlighting importance research mitigating pollution climate change marine ecosystems.
