Abstract Biochar and organic fertilizer substitution have been utilized to improve crop yields promote sustainable agricultural development. However, few studies focused on how biochar regulate the diversities of bacterial meta-communities sub-communities (i.e., habitat specialists generalists) within soil aggregates Loess Plateau. A field experiment, containing six treatments, namely no (CK), plus 10 4 kg ha −1 (CK + B), traditional N (TF, 150 ), (TF replacing (OF), (OF was adopted explore influences size distribution, nutrient levels, extracellular enzymatic stoichiometry, meta-community sub-community diversities, structures, ecological networks, assembly processes bulk soil, large macro-aggregates (> 2 mm), small (0.25–2 micro-aggregates (< 0.25 mm) in proso millet farmland. Results showed that compared CK B treatment, OF treatment enhanced distribution while decreasing micro-aggregates. also markedly elevated contents total nitrogen (TN), carbon (SOC), nitrate (NO 3 − -N), ammonium (NH as well activities C-, N-, P-acquiring enzymes, limitation, reduced limitation macro-aggregates. Compared treatments significantly increased observed OTUs specialist communities macroaggregates, having effect generalist communities. The impacts additions, aggregates, community structure composition were greater than those generalists. RDA analysis NH -N content had a significant influence three aggregates. Ecological network indicated whole complexity stability treatment. Meanwhile, with amendment more complex tighter without biochar. Null-model regimes rarely affected mainly determined by stochastic process. These observations offer theoretical basis for understanding intrinsic relationships between microbial regulated fertilization semi-arid region.

Micropollutants are ubiquitously found in natural surface waters and pose a potential risk to aquatic organisms. Stream biofilms, consisting of bacteria, algae other microorganisms potentially contribute bioremediating environments by biotransforming xenobiotic substances. When investigating the stream biofilms remove micropollutants from water column, it is important distinguish between different fate processes, such as biotransformation, passive sorption active bioaccumulation. However, due complex nature biofilm community its extracellular matrix, this task often difficult. In study, we combined biotransformation experiments involving collected up- downstream wastewater treatment plant outfalls with QuEChERS extraction method processes. The proved be suitable for broad range (> 80% investigated compounds). We that 31 out 63 compounds were biotransformed majority being substitution-type biotransformations, have an increased towards specific wastewater-relevant micropollutants. Overall, using experimental analytical strategy developed, demonstrated inherent micropollutant potential, thus bioremediation improving ecosystem health.

Summary Microbial metacommunities normally comprise generalists and specialists. Uncovering the mechanisms underlying diversity patterns of these two sub‐communities is crucial for aquatic biodiversity maintenance. However, little known about ecological assembly processes co‐occurrence habitat specialists across large spatial scales in plateau lake sediments, particularly regarding their environmental adaptations. Here, we investigated sediment Tibetan lakes role stability metacommunity network. Our results showed that exhibited broader thresholds closer phylogenetic clustering than specialist counterparts. In contrast, stronger signals preferences compared with generalists. Stochastic dominated generalist (63.2%) (81.3%) community assembly. Sediment pH was major factor mediating balance between stochastic deterministic addition, as revealed by network analysis, played a greater maintaining The insights gained from this study can be helpful to understand maintenance microbial lakes.

Abstract Longitudinal environmental heterogeneity and directionality of the water movement are key features that may exert contrasting forces on riverine plankton assembly. Directionality strengthens dispersal‐driven assembly, but this can be masked by urbanization‐induced along river continuum. In light contrast, we aimed at delineating relative importance assembly processes generating distribution patterns bacterioplankton phytoplankton communities in a draining an urbanizing watershed Southeast China. We applied variation partitioning analysis, neutral community model, quantitative process estimate molecular morphological data obtained over years 2012–2016. Despite relatively short distance between sampling sites (< 20 km), similarity decreased with increasing from upstream pristine site toward downstream urban area, formed clusters roughly corresponded to five habitat patches, predefined based hydrology longitudinal landscape change. These were predominantly driven deterministic stochastic for bacterioplankton, respectively, indicating balance dispersal due fluvial connectivity local selective pressures. Considering global loss fragmentation flow regulation, our findings imply plankton‐based ecological approaches could useful hedge against uncertain future rivers watersheds ecologically sustainable way.
