Climate change threatens marine ecosystems with known effects on life, including changes in metabolic rates, survival, and community structure. Based a structured literature review, we developed conceptual “pathways of effects” model that summarizes how three stressors associated climate (warming, acidification, storms) affect functional species groups the West Coast Vancouver Island, Canada. We identified 155 distinct pathways from through 12 categories biological ranging biochemistry individual organisms to composition. Most were affected by several via many pathways, although studies generally considered only small fraction relevant pathways. These depended interest geographical location, highlighting importance local research. exert complex, sometimes contradictory vary across ecological scales. For example, some adversely laboratory appeared beneficial community-scale field studies. Pathways models are helpful tools summarize scientific Compiling them standardized databases would allow researchers practitioners search regions better support ecosystem-based management environmental impact assessment.

Despite the recognized important ecological role that cetaceans play in marine environment, their protection is still scarcely enforced Mediterranean Sea even though this area strongly threatened by local human pressures and climate change. The piecemeal of knowledge related to cetaceans' ecology distribution basin undermines capacity addressing identifying effective conservation strategies. In study, an Ecosystem-Based Marine Spatial Planning (EB-MSP) approach applied assess on guide designation a Gulf Taranto, Northern Ionian (Central-eastern Sea). Taranto hosts different cetacean species accomplish phases life area. fact, gulf does not fall within any area-based management tools (ABMTs) for conservation. We pin down being eligible diverse ABMTs conservation, both legally non-legally binding. Cumulative impacts increasingly threaten marine and coastal ecosystems. To address this issue, the research community has invested efforts on designing testing different methodological approaches tools that apply cumulative impact appraisal schemes for a sound evaluation of complex interactions dynamics among multiple pressures affecting Through an iterative scientometric systematic literature review, paper provides state art assessment applications. It gives specific attention to cutting-edge explore model inter-relations climatic anthropogenic pressures, vulnerability resilience ecosystems these resulting changes in ecosystem services flow. Despite recent advances computer sciences rising availability big data environmental monitoring management, review evidenced implementation advanced system methods risk remains limited. Moreover, experts have only recently started integrating flow into frameworks, but more as general endpoint within overall process (e.g. bundle against impacts). The also highlights lack integrated able frame, explain, spatio-temporal ecosystems' response required under relevant EU legislation (e.g., Water Framework Marine Strategy Directives). Progress understanding impacts, exploiting functionalities sophisticated machine learning-based integration), will support decision-makers achievement sustainability objectives.
