Abstract. Trees predominantly take up mercury (Hg) from the atmosphere via stomatal assimilation of gaseous elemental Hg (GEM). is oxidised in leaves/needles and transported to other tree anatomy including bole wood, where it can be stored long-term. Using associated with growth rings facilitates archiving historical GEM concentrations. Nonetheless, there are significant knowledge gaps on cycling within trees. We investigate archived rings, internal cycling, differences uptake mechanisms Norway spruce European larch sampled 1 km a HgCl2-contaminated site using total (THg) stable isotope analyses. Tree ring samples indicative increases THg concentrations (up 521 µg kg−1) background period (BGP; facility closed; 1992–present) secondary industrial (2ndIP; no HgCl2 wood treatment; 1962–1992) primary (1stIP; active ≈ 1900–1962). Mass-dependent fractionation (MDF) data shifted negative during periods (δ202Hg 1stIP: −4.32 ± 0.15 ‰, 2ndIP: −4.04 0.32 BGP: −2.83 0.74 ‰; SD). Even accounting for −2.6 ‰ MDF shift uptake, these emissions derived activity being enriched lighter isotopes reduction Hg0 volatilisation. Similar (δ202Hg: −3.90 0.30 SD) bark (137 105 suggests that downward transport also dominant mechanism (reflective stomatal-uptake shift) rather than deposition bark. was sapwood all trees across both species. Thirty-two trace elements were examined in the tree rings of downy oak to evaluate pollution levels close a cement plant isolated rural context and an industrial area where multiple sources air are or present. Tree cores collected from trees growing 1 km both that located 8 each other. The analysis was performed on annual 1990 2016 using laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Trace Cs, Mg, Mn, S Zn reflected emission history plant. Their values have increased since early 2000s, when started its activity. However, lack significant trends pollutants possible effect translocation volatility some left open questions. very weak changes other period 1990-2016 suggest those do not mark any additional activity background pollution. results confirm plants must be considered forest archive accessible through dendrochemistry.

Dendrochemistry, the study of elements found within tree rings, has been used to understand environmental changes from both natural and anthropogenic sources. When appropriately, dendrochemistry can provide a greater understanding elemental in environment. However, species-specific processes have shown impact results, research field scrutinized due need for that role-specific such as translocation play. This systematic literature review examines dendrochemistry’s history, highlights how changed, hypothesizes where it might be headed. This research investigates the long-term environmental impact and historical temporal pollution patterns caused by a former copper mine in Iwiny (south-western Poland) using dendrochemical approach. An additional aspect of this was considering possibility inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) measurement technique as cheaper alternative to plasma mass (ICP-MS) analyses conducted mining areas. In study area, tailings storage facility (TSF) dam failure (1967) took place alkaline flotation waste containing high concentration Cu Pb are stored. Tree cores from pedunculate oak (Quercus robur L.) were analysed for content 11 trace elements (TEs) (Cd, Mn, Ni, Zn, Cr, Co, Pb, Cu, Fe, Al, Ag) ICP-OES technique, while tree rings’ widths (TRWs) also measured. Samples that most significant context goals verified with ICP-MS method. The results revealed strong industry reflected substantial increase mean contents of: (1) Fe industrial vs. control trees, (2) TRWs trees. However, observed TEs did not correspond known timing inputs (mining activity, spill). Peak levels Zn after closed. lack new sources relationship strongly suggests rings recorded chemical signal TSF reclamation (the use fertilizers agrotechnical interventions).
