Abstract Rivers are the natural drainage system, transporting anthropogenic wastes and pollution, including microplastics (plastic < 5 mm). In a riverine can enter from different sources, have spatial variance in concentration, physical chemical properties, imposed risk to ecosystem. This pilot study presents an examination of water sediment samples using single sample collection rural Raquette River, NY evaluate hypothesis that distinct locations river, such as downstream wastewater treatment plant, upstream hydro-dam, river confluence, may be higher concentration. general, our results revealed presence high microplastic concentrations plant (in sediments), hydro dam (both sediment), confluence (water sample), compared other sites. Moreover, assessment indicates even with most its basin comprising forested agricultural land, water, at all three polluted (pollution load index, PLI > 1; zone = 1.87 1.68 for respectively), categories between Levels I IV (“minor” “danger”). The overall objective this was advance understanding dynamics systems, elucidating their introduction point source (wastewater plant), transit through impediment (hydro-dam), release into vital transboundary (confluence Raquette-St. Lawrence Rivers).

Freshwater rivers play the key role in providing drinking water sources and building bridge of oceans lands. Hence, environmental pollutants can be transferred into through a treatment process transported land-based microplastics ocean. Urban clusters are recognized as hotspots of microplastic pollution, and the associated urban rivers convey microplastics into global oceans. Despite this knowledge, relative contributions various sources to annual emissions from catchments remain scarcely quantified. Here, we quantified a riverine catchment in Japan. The total (size range: 10-5000 μm) released amounted 269.1 tons/annum, which 78.1% is contributed by surface runoff other uncontrolled (UCE), 21.1% emerges regulated wastewater (controlled emissions; CE), implying that approximately one-fifth intercepted removed treatment plants (WWTPs). This further indicated higher pollution unmanaged compared untreated wastewater. In dry season, WWTPs significantly reduction (95%) wet periods (8%). On an scale, treated effluent occupies only 0.1% river network (212.4 tons/annum), while remaining portion dominated UCE, i.e., primarily (98.9%), trivially background inputs potentially derived through atmospheric depositions days (1.0%).
