Not much is known about early responses of pelagic fish populations to rapidly increasing nutrient concentrations in originally oligotrophic lakes. Here we report on population parameters a pair ciscoes (Coregonus spp.) exposed accelerating eutrophication the deep (69.5 m) and stratified Lake Stechlin (NE Germany), which total phosphorus (TP) concentration increased from 15 mg m-3 >60 within 10 years. With TP concentrations, lower Secchi depths, declining oxygen deeper water layers, higher phytoplankton zooplankton biomass were observed. Correlation analyses supported strong bottom-up directed effects primary secondary producers, negative quality parameters. Annual hydroacoustic records midwater trawling showed an increase average individual size. There was no temporal trend biomass, but observed cyclic annual fluctuations. Diel vertical migration (DVM) amplitudes declined, primarily by occurrence shallower waters than previous years during daytime. We propose that release density-dependent food limitation, due plankton abundances, resulted sizes for both cisco species, turn increasingly blurs species discrimination because length distributions are longer substantially different. Our data show value long-term lake monitoring including surveys, understand initially subtle changes biotic communities, may precede more drastic potentially irreversible anthropogenic pressures.

Microplastics (MPs) have received increasing attention in the last decade and are now considered among most concerning emerging pollutants natural environments. Here, current knowledge on microplastic ingestion by wild freshwater fish is reviewed with a focus identification of possible factors leading to MPs consequences health. Freshwater bioindicators have been developed to assess ecosystem health and responses human-induced stressors. To date, most primarily rely on the species identity of plant animal communities do not account for interactions among organisms fluxes energy between trophic levels. Body size is one important ecological traits in aquatic ecosystems because it governs affected by environmental conditions but, surprisingly, many assessment approaches use individual body size. The community spectrum defined as linear relationship abundance reflects several features including carrying capacity, predation-prey interactions, fluxes. In this study, we explored potential using parameters (slope, elevation linearity) fish a complementary bioindicator 51 natural lakes 102 reservoirs distributed across France. We determined how other common based fish, macrophyte phytoplankton responded water quality degradation, littoral habitat alterations invasions. Results demonstrated that: (i) was driven degradation both reservoirs, while loss invasion (ii) more sensitive than lakes. This study highlights that could provide additional insights into our understanding freshwater global changes serve improve efficiency management programs. can be done at very limited cost commonly measured biomonitoring protocols.

Non-destructive and cost-effective fish diversity monitoring approaches are needed for the management protection of estuarine ecosystems. Environmental DNA (eDNA) technology is a promising, environmentally friendly that has been applied in studies In this study, we investigated seasonal composition, diversity, structure community Pearl River Estuary (PRE) using eDNA gillnetting. We identified 156 PRE, including 26 orders, 58 families, 93 genera, 115 species according to technology. And provided more taxonomic composition information PRE than did Significant or highly significant differences were detected between wet dry seasons. Fifteen eight genus-level indicator taxa differed significantly two seasons gillnetting, respectively. However, study suggest some not overlap approaches. Therefore, should include combination gillnetting comprehensive data analysis. Our findings have important implications ecosystem management.

Fish are an important component of aquatic ecosystems, thus representative and reliable assessments their population variables essential for a variety ecological applications, management conservation. Determining Density per actual Spatial Unit (volume or area, FDSU) as measure absolute fish quantity is particular interest. Gillnets undoubtedly one the most common methods assessing populations in large lentic waters. However, direct calculating FDSU from gillnet catches impossible because passive nature this method, to date there no model catches. This weakness largely limits use data applications requiring estimates. The aim study was calibrate using obtained by active (beach seine nets hydroacoustics) develop tool To achieve goal, we compared biomass estimated methods, both which cover similar spatiotemporal niches. comparison performed statistical approach based on recognition non-negligible random measurement error explanatory (active methods) response (gillnets) variables. We found strong positive linear relationship between biomasses sampled with gillnets methods. slope fitted when comparing two method used allowed inclusion estimates refining credible intervals relationship. effect effort accuracy simulated show how increased narrows interval. Invasive alien species cause significant loss of biodiversity. The presence invasive is often left unnoticed until they become highly abundant, and early detection by citizens can serve as an indicator invasion. Here, we aimed to investigate the probability gibel carp (Carassius gibelio) native critically endangered species, crucian carassius), using typical methods employed conservation agencies (fyke nets) (angling). Three sites with carp, nine syntopy five were investigated. proportion caught each method was compared catch per unit effort (CPUE) a measure fish density calculated number hour. Although are closely related occupy similar positions in ecosystem, results showed high affinity for (citizen method), while higher (common professional monitoring extent that one be easily missed when sampled only methods. These bring two important findings, namely need include citizen knowledge progress potential danger underestimating invasion conservationists scientists. also suggest may overlooked citizens.
