Inappropriate management of municipal solid waste dumpsites is a major cause groundwater contamination in developing countries, but the extent problem not known. This study investigated quality vicinity Olusosun dumpsite Lagos, Nigeria, most populous city sub-Saharan Africa. During 2020, monthly samples were collected 17 wells and boreholes used as drinking water sources, analysed for 20 physico-chemical parameters. Differences between sites seasons statistically assessed, together with changes index (WQI). The results indicated that heavy metals (Pb2+, Ni+, Mn2+, Fe2+, Cr6+), cations (Ca2+, Mg2+, K+), total hardness pH main parameters impairing quality. Drinking standards from both World Health Organization Nigeria government exceeded more often wet than dry season. Some properties negatively correlated distance to (e.g., Fe, Pb2+, NO3−). Significant differences identified, no clear spatial trend. WQI varied excellent (6%–24% over period) unsuitable purposes (12%–18%), good prevailing at (35%–47%). Although declined 24% during improvements compared previous decades. Remediation strategies must be implemented safeguard public health sustainability resources.

Nitrate groundwater contamination poses significant health risks, especially in infants and pregnant women. Therefore, effective aqueous nitrate removal is crucial. This study focuses on using acid modified biochar derived from the invasive plant Prosopis juliflora bark, hereafter referred to APBBC700 used for all studies. was characterized Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) identify surface functional groups, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) morphology, transmission (TEM) size shape. The Brunauer, Emmett, Teller area (SBET) of 20.8 m2/g compared 14.5 raw (PBBC700). Fixed bed sorption studies were carried out at depths 7, 14, 21 cm, flow rates 3, 5, 7 mL/min, 10, 20, 30 mg/L NO3-N. Column breakthrough data fitted Thomas, Yoon-Nelson, Adam-Bohart, Wolborska, bed-depth-service-time (BDST) models. BDST models best fit fixed-bed (R2 = 0.74 0.98). A maximum adsorption capacity 8.51 mg/g obtained a rate 3 cm depth, regeneration 0.5 N NaCl. Adsorption capacities 7.72, 6.73, 5.81, 5.69, 5.31, 5.3, 4.21, 2.0 0th, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th cycles, respectively. even presence coexisting anions. The nitrate ion (NO3-) is a typical pollutant in environmental samples, posing threat to the aquatic ecosystem and human health. Therefore, rapid accurate detection of NO3- crucial for both sciences government regulations. Here we report fabrication an amino-functionalized, vertically ordered mesoporous silica film (NH2-VMSF) confining localized copper nanoparticles (CuNPs) electrochemical NO3-. NH2-VMSF-carrying amino groups possess perpendicular nanochannel structure ultrasmall nanopores, enabling confined growth CuNPs through electrodeposition method. resulting CuNPs/NH2-VMSF-modified indium tin oxide (ITO) electrode (CuNPs/NH2-VMSF/ITO) combines electrocatalytic reduction ability electrostatic attraction capacity NH2-VMSF towards Thus, it sensitive method determination with wide linear range 5.0-1000 μM low limit 2.3 μM. Direct water samples (tap water, lake seawater, rainwater) acceptable recoveries ranging from 97.8% 109% was performed, demonstrating that proposed CuNPs/NH2-VMSF/ITO sensor has excellent reproducibility, regeneration, anti-interference abilities.
