Abstract Microplastics are polymer-based materials with carbon as their main framework. During degradation, they release greenhouse gases such dioxide and methane. Additionally, environmental microplastics can enter plant tissues, triggering oxidative stress in cells, adversely affecting photosynthesis, metabolism, gene expression, other growth parameters. This reduction efficiency sequestering utilizing atmospheric indirectly impacts global cycling, exacerbating the effect. Furthermore, significantly alter soil structure composition of microbial communities, emissions dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, thus promoting gas emissions. Increasing research suggests a mutual reinforcement between microplastic pollution climate warming, where exacerbates rise average temperature leads to resuspension sediments, intensifying environment. article primarily focuses on different ecosystems relationship warming. Microplastics (MPs) are contaminants of emerging concern that accumulate in various environments, where they pose threats to both the ecosystem and public health. Since MPs have been detected drinking water resources wastewater effluents, more efficient treatment is needed at plants (WWTPs) (DWTPs). This review discusses potential biological, photochemical, Fenton (-like) systems, ozonation, other oxidation processes terms their indicators such as mass loss surface oxidation. The were further analyzed limitations environmental implications. Most previous studies examining degradation using conventional treatments—such UV disinfection, chlorination—employed significantly higher doses than common applied DWTPs WWTPs. Owing dose gaps, oxidative transformation observed many not likely occur under practical conditions. Some novel showed promising efficiencies, while them yet on a larger scale due high costs lack extensive basic research.
