Understanding the impact of plastic and its additives on wild species is crucial as their presence in environment increases. Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), once used flame retardants, were restricted due to known toxic effects, but are still detected environment. Naturally occurring methoxylated PBDEs (MeO-BDEs) can result from PBDE transformation may cause similar hazardous effects. Yellow-legged gulls (Larus michahellis, YLG) Audouin's (Ichthyaetus audouinii, AG) highly susceptible additives, distribution, trophic position, behaviour. In this study, we assessed MeO-BDEs uptake different tissues effects physiological reproductive parameters. Findings indicate that, apart annual differences, adult AG accumulated more than YLG a natural breeding habitat (Deserta), while latter had lower levels city Porto. relation chicks, only Deserta showed higher concentrations chicks. Individual analysis each parameter revealed impacts for Deserta, with neurofunction immune system inhibition at MeO-BDE concentrations. For impaired neurofunction, chicks Porto exhibited potential genotoxicity triggered by levels. Overall health activation antioxidant defences compromised adults high values PBDEs, inflammation oxidative stress same species. Fertility parameters significant differences sperm counts though suggesting individuals be able compensate any exposure This study confirms widespread plastic-associated compounds harmful gulls, particularly system, balance fertility, especially MeO-BDEs.

Living with increasing urbanisation and human populations requires resourcefulness flexibility in wild animals' behaviour. Animals have to adapt anthropogenic novelty habitat structure resources that may not resemble, or be as beneficial as, natural resources. Herring gulls Larus argentatus increasingly reside towns cities breed forage, yet how are adjusting their behaviour life urban areas is fully understood. This study investigated herring gulls' responses novel common objects rural locations. We also examined whether age influenced object response found that, out of the 126 individual presented objects, 34% approached them. suggests majority targeted were wary lacked interest experimental set‐up. Of 43 we those tested locations more slowly than counterparts. Overall, showed no preference for either did influence likelihood approach, approach speed choice. Individuals paid most attention they first, potentially indicative preferences. Our findings indicated attracted anecdotal reports suggested. Covering up obvious food rewards thus help mitigate human–gull conflict over sources.

Gulls, as largely flexible opportunistic individuals, have been increasingly breeding in many cities around the world, but it is still unclear whether urban habitats are of equal or higher quality than traditional natural represent an ecological trap with immediate reproductive benefits longer‐term detrimental consequences to health. Here we present a study parameters (nest density, egg dimensions, clutch size, hatching success and adult body condition) physiological (erythrocyte sedimentation rate, heterophil/lymphocyte ratio, haemoglobin concentration measurements oxidative stress) indicators general health condition Yellow‐legged Gull Larus michahellis adults chicks from colonies. Gulls largest area (Porto) laid smaller eggs clutches, showed significantly lower occurrence inflammatory processes chicks, slower early chick growth colony Deserta. This suggests that gulls might be facing important trade‐offs between advantages density colonies, fewer intraspecific interactions disease transmission probability, disadvantages having anthropogenic diet usually nutritional value.

Analysis of the qualitative signature fatty acids in tissues organisms is an increasingly utilized tool studies trophic ecology aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. Here, we studied a colonial waterbird, black-headed gull Chroicocephalus ridibundus, nesting three colonies. We aimed to investigate whether acid composition its eggs affected by location colony (reflecting spatial variation habitat and, turn, female diet at time egg formation), laying sequence temporal diet). found that gulls differed among colonies, but not subsequent within clutch. interpret these results context differences females breeding different colonies lack individual females. The pattern ratio omega-3 omega-6 reflected contribution aquatic/terrestrial prey their diet, was consistent with area water courses around High levels omega-6:omega-3 can promote inflammation thus lead increased susceptibility antigens. Omega-3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (n3-LCPUFAs) are produced primarily in aquatic ecosystems and considered essential nutrients for predators given their structural role vertebrates’ cerebral tissues. Alarmingly, with urbanization, many animals now rely on anthropogenic foods lacking n3-LCPUFAs. In this study undertaken Newfoundland (Canada), we tested whether recent or longer term diet explains the acid composition of ring-billed gulls ( Larus delawarensis ), a seabird that thrives cities. During breeding season, levels n3-LCPUFAs were significantly higher nesting natural habitat foraging marine food (mean ± s.d.: 32 1% total identified acids) than urban nesters exploiting rubbish (27 1%). Stable isotope analysis blood feathers showed shared similar diets autumn winter, suggesting difference during season was owing to concomitant transient differences diet. We also experimentally manipulated gulls’ throughout incubation by supplementing them fish oil rich n3-LCPUFAs, caloric control nothing, found evidence increased nesters’ These complementary analyses provide brain remains plastic adulthood responds short-term dietary changes.

Coastal urbanisation negatively affects marine ecosystems through habitat degradation and pollution. Cory's (Calonectris borealis) Scopoli's (C. diomedea) shearwaters are closely related species inhabiting the Northeast Atlantic Ocean Mediterranean Sea, respectively. This study assesses fatty acid profile, with trophic foraging ecology, of breeding at Berlenga (Atlantic Ocean) Chafarinas (Mediterranean Sea) Islands. The diet quality is expected to be generally lower, characterised by reduced levels ω-3 acids. Additionally, higher concentrations specific markers anticipated, reflecting Mediterranean's semi-enclosed environment, low productivity, pollution challenges. These include oleic acid, vaccenic trans acids (indicative urban industrial discharges), odd-chain bacterial presence). supported these predictions, in having acids, trans-palmitoleic their plasma. Yet, were also shearwaters. may result from diverse prey availability selection, different exploitation, partially differences ecology patterns both species; or an enhanced immunological basal response cope anthropogenic pressure western Sea. Further studies including contaminant analyses crucial understand profiles seabirds oceanic basins implications for seabird populations.
