Microplastics (MPs) have been detected in all environmental locations, including the atmosphere. However, few studies investigated presence of airborne MPs human respiratory system. Our research purpose was to investigate these pollutants lower airways 44 adult European citizens, using bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) collection as a minimally invasive method, that enables detection living patients. We studied relationship between patients' life habits and physiological parameters, based on background information medical occupational history, concentration isolated from their systems. results indicate most were form microfibers (MFs) (97.06%), with an average 9.18 ± 2.45 items/100 mL BALF, only 5.88% (0.57 0.27 BALF) particulate MPs, without significant environmental, physiological, or clinical factors. The size 1.73 0.15 mm, longest dimension (9.96 mm) corresponding polyacrylic fiber. Taken together, demonstrated occurrence airway, although more are necessary elucidate negative effects could induce system its associated diseases.

Airborne microplastics (MPs) have recently drawn the attention of scientific community due to their possible human inhalation risk. Indoor environments are relevance as people spend about 90% time indoors. This study evaluated MPs concentrations in three indoor environments: houses, public transport and working places, which representative urban life. Sampling involved collection airborne particulate matter on nylon 20 μm pore size filters. Samples were first visually inspected, particles characterized (colour, length or area). Polymer identification was performed through μFTIR analysis. Working conditions controlled guarantee quality assurance avoid background contamination. Limits detection, recovery tests repeatability with home-made polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), polystyrene (PS) standards. The highest average MP found buses (17.3 ± 2.4 MPs/m3) followed by 5.8 1.9 MPs/m3 subways, 4.8 1.6 4.2 workplaces. Polyamide, PA (51%), polyester PES (48%) PP (1%) polymers identified most common personal care products synthetic textiles. Most these below 100 for both fibres (64 8%) fragments (78 11%). frequency our decreased increasing size, points potential an hazard.

Microplastics (MP) are plastic particles with dimension up to 5 mm. Due their persistence, global spread across different ecosystems and potential human health effects, they have gained increasing attention during the last decade. However, extent of exposure MP through pathways intake not been elucidated.The objective this review is provide an overview on inhalation, ingestion, dermal contact considering data from open bibliography in air, dust, food, water drinks.A bibliographic search Scopus PubMed was conducted using keywords outdoor indoor food including beverages (n = 521). Articles were sorted by title abstract 213), only studies reporting identification quantification techniques further considered 168). A total 115 articles that include quality assurance control (QA/QC) procedures finally discussed present review. Based concentration available literature, we estimated inhaled dose (ID), dust (DI), daily (EDI) via beverages. Finally, (TDI) both inhalation ingestion routes provided for adults, infants newborns.The concentrations according bibliography. Human air food/drinks consumption revealed drinking waters main sources MP.This study reveals humans constantly exposed MP, environment ingest decisively contribute intake. Additionally, highlight newborns high needed evaluate presence risk vulnerable age-population.
