The presence of emerging organic contaminants (EOCs) in the environment is increasing and requires development technologies for their effective removal. Therefore, a literature review on behavior EOCs during municipal wastewater treatment, both major treatment systems particularly constructed wetlands (CWs), was carried out. study also reviewed anaerobic digesters (ADs) advanced oxidation processes, TiO2-based photocatalysis, which are being proposed as promising pre- post-treatments combination with CW. following ten compounds were screened: acetaminophen (ACE), ofloxacin (OFL), caffeine (CAF), carbamazepine (CBZ), ketoprofen (KET), ibuprofen (IBU), diclofenac (DCL), clofibric acid (ACB), bisphenol A (BPA), sotalol (SOT). degradation pathways selected largely influenced by physicochemical biochemical properties. Sorption biodegradation main elimination mechanisms found AD CW systems, where aerobic environments improves efficiency EOCs. However, various appear recalcitrant. In this sense, CWs, photocatalysis emerges post-treatment EOC removal from wastewater.

Ketoprofen, a bicyclic non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug commonly used in human and veterinary medicine, has recently been cited as an environmental contaminant that raises concerns for ecological well-being. It poses growing threat due to its racemic mixture, enantiomers, transformation products, which have ecotoxicological effects on various organisms, including invertebrates, vertebrates, plants, microorganisms. Furthermore, ketoprofen is bioaccumulated biomagnified throughout the food chain, threatening ecosystem function. Surprisingly, despite these concerns, not currently considered priority substance. While targeted eco-pharmacovigilance proposed, data pharmaceutical are limited incomplete. This review aims provide comprehensive summary of most recent findings (from 2017 March 2023) regarding global distribution environment, ecotoxicity towards aquatic animals available removal methods. Special emphasis placed understanding how affects microorganisms play pivotal role Earth’s ecosystems. The broadly covers approaches biodegradation, whole-cell fungal bacterial systems well enzyme biocatalysts.
