Over recent decades, global warming has led to sustained glacier mass reduction and the formation of lakes dammed by potentially unstable moraines. When such dams break, devastating Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs) can occur in high mountain environments with catastrophic effects on populations infrastructure. To understand occurrence GLOFs space time, build frequency-magnitude relationships for disaster risk or identify regional links between GLOF frequency climate warming, comprehensive databases are critically needed. inventories have thus been compiled at both scales. While these accounts offer valuable data hazard assessment, many events omitted because they occurred before satellite era prior installation river gauges, went unreported were only mentioned local media but not documented scientific literature. In addition, while geomorphic evidence past exist, their timing oftentimes remains unknown. These discontinuities preclude identification return periods most disastrous makes link ongoing remain inconclusive. overcome limitations, long-term records developed using a wide variety proxies. Here, we explore potential coupling dendrogeomorphology analyses reconstruct event that era. The Grosse Glacier outlet, San Rafael National Park, Chilean Patagonia, was selected based imagery, historical photographs testimonies indicating previous lake drainage. Tree-ring analysis allowed massive five smaller floods from 105 disturbed Nothofagus Podocarpus trees. Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) imagery object-based image (OBIA) used boulders estimate flow direction glacio-fluvial floodplain point least one high-energy event. Aerial photo also revealed 200-m-wide breach frontal moraine disappearance lateral lake, estimated be 1.8 km2 size, sometimes after 1944-45. An in-depth interview an eyewitness pinpointed date October 1957, line damage tree-ring precipitation Puerto Aysén. conjunction, different approaches contribute insights into consequences extreme events, aiding future assessments hazards, other high-mountain environments.
