The
complex
aquatic
system
of
dam
reservoirs
is
known
to
trap
emerging
pollutants
as
microplastics
(MPs)
in
sediments
and
water
column.
Considering
the
knowledge
gaps
this
type
environment,
we
investigated
amount
distribution
MPs
surface
layer,
well
deep
Siriu
Reservoir
Buzău
River
system,
which
located
southern
area
Eastern
Carpathians,
Romania.
There
was
a
discrepancy
between
MP
abundancy
both
sediment
samples
collected
near
reservoir
(5.3
MPs/m3,
315.5
MPs/kg)
at
several
kilometers
downstream
(1.4
132.5
MPs/kg).
chronological
accumulation
lacustrine
determined
by
analyzing
5
cm
intervals
50
length
core
extracted
from
bed.
By
comparing
concentration
identified
each
interval
with
solid
debit
volumes
registered
last
decade,
found
that
flood
events
could
be
traced
easily
due
abundant
accumulation.
Morphologically,
particles
were
observed
mainly
fibers
fragments.

As
millions
of
tonnes
plastics
wind
up
in
the
environment,
plastic
pollution
is
a
severe
issue
that
worsens
with
time.
In
addition
to
primary
particles,
large
items
are
fragmented
due
ultraviolet
radiation,
degradation,
and
other
environmental
causes,
resulting
minuscule
compounds,
known
as
microplastics
or
nanoplastics.
They
adsorb
hazardous
contaminants
easily
get
absorbed
by
organisms,
for
example,
polychlorinated
biphenyls,
polycyclic
aromatic
hydrocarbons,
heavy
metals
adhered
microplastic
surfaces
their
tiny
size
surface
area.
Studies
on
toxicity
fate
crucial
light
these
challenges,
but
effectiveness
depends
sampling
procedure,
sample
preparation,
characterization,
analysis,
quantification
techniques.
The
standard
methods
characterization
performed
using
Fourier
transform
infrared
resonance,
Raman
Spectroscopy,
pyrolysis
Gas
Chromatography
Mass
Spectrometry.
Unfortunately,
none
techniques
can
achieve
in-situ
non-invasive
characterization.
These
processes
complex,
non-uniform
across
studies,
different
specific
domains
such
soil/sediment,
water
groundwater,
biota,
atmosphere.
Thus,
current
study
highlights
methodology
being
used
sampling,
analysis
from
solid,
aqueous,
air,
biota
samples.
This
review
paper
also
specifies
tool
concentration
types
Future
studies
should
prioritize
development
standardized
protocols
ensure
comparability
diverse
ecosystems.
Additionally,
employing
advanced
analytical
collaborating
interdisciplinary
fields
enhance
accuracy
reliability
separation
methods.

Microplastics
(MPs)
form
the
most
investigated
plastic
category
since
their
size
(1
μm-
5
mm)
enables
them
to
accumulate
in
various
environmental
compartments
and
be
ingested
by
biota.
Beach
sand
sediment
can
indicators
of
MP
contamination
levels
coastal
marine
ecosystem
and,
thus,
they
are
widely
analyzed.
With
increasing
number
publications
recent
years,
there
is
a
need
for
constant
updates
on
variety
extraction
analysis
procedures
developed.
Thus,
this
review
aims
evaluate
sample
preparation
techniques
MPs
provide
critical
discussion
determination
based
studies
published
last
years.
We
also
report
conditions
imposed
identification
quantification
isolation
as
well
materials
used
procedures.
Finally,
we
address
expectations
new
challenges
related
instrumental
innovations.
