Microfibers (MFs), the dominant form of microplastics in ecosystems, pose a significant environmental risk due to inadequacy existing wastewater treatments remove them. Recognising need develop sustainable solutions tackle this challenge, research aimed find an eco-friendly solution pervasive problem MFs contaminating water bodies. Unused remnants bacterial cellulose (BC) were ground hydrogel-form (BCH) and used as potential bioflocculant for polyacrylonitrile MFs. The flocculation efficiency was evaluated across various operational factors, employing response surface methodology computational modelling elucidate model their impact on process. results revealed that BCH:MFs ratio mixing intensity key factors efficiency, with BCH resilient range conditions, achieving 93.6 % average removal rate. BCH's strong retention released only 8.3 MFs, after 24-hour wash, tests contaminated chlorinated yielded 89.3 86.1 respectively. Therefore, presents viable, sustainable, effective approach removing from MFs-contaminated water, exhibiting exceptional performance adaptability. This pioneer study using sets new standard treatment, catalysing fibrous pollutant mitigation protection.

This review addresses the role of household washing machines in release plastic microfibers (MFs), and means to minimize emissions. Specifically, various strategies with potential mitigate MFs discharge are critically evaluated, such as modifying laundering conditions implementing point-of-use capturing systems. The currently available point-of use devices for removal associated technical limitations, obtaining a complete contaminants remains an open challenge. To allow safe wash water target impending regulations, should be user-friendly, compatible machines, easily maintainable, provide near MFs. Advantages, challenges thus discussed, possible improvement proposed. detection techniques also briefly presented this review, need standardization simplification is highlighted. Overall, efforts required promote wide approach toward environment-friendly textiles, including source control, encouraging biodegradable materials recycling, effective filtration treatment processes MFs, both at centralized plants.

The ingestion of synthetic microfibers, the most prevalent type microplastics in marine environments, and natural fibers was assessed Engraulis engrasicolus Mullus barbatus, two commercially important fish species Mediterranean Sea. Microfibers were isolated from gastrointestinal tract using a 10% potassium hydroxide solution. For microfiber characterization, evaluation specific morphological features light microscope, coupled with Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) analysis subsample particles, applied. preliminary results showed occurrence microfibers 53 60% European anchovy Red mullet, respectively. A mean 6.9 microfibers/individual detected anchovies, while on average mullet samples contained 9.2 microfibers/individual. common colors both black, blue, transparent. Visual characterization allowed classification 40% items as microfibers. FTIR spectroscopy confirmed visual by fiber morphology. made different typologies polymers, represented cellulose, cotton, polyester. These findings confirm wide distribution fibrous microplastics, may impact pelagic deep-sea trophic webs. Despite presence poses potential risk to human health, literature is scarce regarding studies uptake commercial mostly due methodological issues. corroborated spectroscopic techniques, be useful differentiate fibers, representing fast easy method assess microplastic pollution species.

Abstract Microplastics (MPs) are a growing issue because they endanger both aquatic organisms and humans. Studies have indicated that wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) one of the major contributors to MPs in environment. However, studies on abundance MP contamination WWTPs its transmission into still scarce, especially Egypt. The goal this study was examine temporal fluctuations distribution surface water dominant macroinvertebrate fauna ( Culex sp. larvae) fixed basin Sohag Governorate, average 3.01 ± 0.9 particles/L. results seasonal variation significantly higher winter than other seasons. risk index for polymers (H), pollution load (PLI), potential ecological (RI) were used assess degree contamination. has moderate H values (<1000) presence with hazard scores such as polyester (PES), polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP). According PLI values, is extremely contaminated (PLI: 88 120). RI showed (level V). larvae seasonally changed an 85% detection rate, 0.24 0.65 particles/ind, concentration influenced by characters (shape, color, polymer). greater preference black red fibrous (PES) sizes (<1000 μm) MPs. These findings suggest prefer ingesting resemble their food. It possible overestimate sp.'s lower catabolism To better understand preferences MPs, further controlled trials should be conducted. With growing population sub-Saharan Africa, managing generally, waste, particular, represents continuous challenge. only between 15–25% its recycled, larger proportion either burnt openly or open spaces landfills, where pollute environment. Moreover, some finds way into waterways through estuaries water networks cause harm man food chain. article examines literature highlight environmental health impact pollution it proposes mitigation strategies reduce critical consequences pollution.
