ABSTRACT Large‐scale coastal reclamation projects threaten small‐scale fisheries that are critical to food security, economic stability, and cultural heritage. We investigated if how livelihood strategies mediated impacts of on social resilience fishery communities in Penang, Malaysia. used the sustainable livelihoods framework (SLF) explore fishers adapted environmental shocks effectiveness for maintaining livelihoods. A mixed‐methods approach combined structured surveys semi‐structured interviews. However, due limited access projects, only two five planned interviews with community leaders were completed. Secondary data also examined from reports by governmental authorities impact assessments. Human, natural, capital provided significant bottom‐up contributions adaptive strategies, while financial was less effective improving sustainability because structural constraints subsidies alternative jobs. Our findings highlight need targeted policy approaches facilitate capacity building, access, community‐based resource management. contribute a discussion balances development, justice, so growing nations do not leave behind their most marginalized fishing communities.

Since 2000, coastal reclamation projects have been implemented in the Guangxi Beibu Gulf to alleviate shortage of land resources. As a result, area has increased significantly. In this study, based on Landsat program, we tracked waters 21st century. An indicator system was proposed assess driving forces synthetically. Our results showed that 98.6 km 2 reclaimed from 1997 2017, which three regions underwent great changes: Fangcheng Bay, Tieshan and Qiznhou Bay. Furthermore, spatio-temporal changes were affected by combination population growth, economic development, marine industry development cities. These provide an important historical reference for tracking human processes Gulf, also offer some suggestions rational allocation

Land reclamation is a common strategy for coastal cities to expand their land territories. Although the marine environment degradation caused by has been investigated in numerous studies, further exploration terms of spatial–temporal impacts patterns and uses reclaimed lands on required generate detailed policies urban planning. Two-thirds Macao's territorial space come from ocean since middle 19th century. Taking history Macao 1975 2018 as empirical case, this study quantifies landscape metrics through time, explores impact water conditions Granger causality tests, stepwise regression use across different spatial scales. Results show that have instant effects flow velocity storm tide fluctuation, while various are related turbidity quality with time lag length two three years after projects completed. The strength relationship between also depends upon natural-like shorelines ecological solutions proximity intensive development recommended mitigate negative conditions. The expanding urbanization of coastal areas has led to increased ocean sprawl, which had both physical and chemical adverse effects on marine ecosystems. To maintain the health functionality these ecosystems, it is imperative develop effective solutions. One such solution involves use biodegradable polymers as bioactive coatings enhance bioreceptivity infrastructures. Our study aimed explore two main objectives: (1) investigate PHA-degrading bacteria polymer-coated surfaces in surrounding seawater, (2) comparing biofilm colonization between with without polymer coating. We applied poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) [P(3HB)) concrete at concentrations 1% 6% w/v, varying numbers coating cycles (1, 3, 6). findings revealed that addition P(3HB) indeed promoted accelerated growth coated surfaces, resulting an occupied area approximately 50% 100% larger than observed negative control. This indicates a remarkable enhancement, rate roughly 1.5 2 times faster untreated surfaces. noteworthy distinctions patterns based concentration number cycles. Interestingly, treatments low high exhibited comparable enhancements those Further investigation into bacterial communities responsible for degradation identified mostly common widespread strains but found no relation Nevertheless, this microbial process was be highly efficient, manifesting noticeable within single month. While initial are promising, it’s essential conduct tests under natural conditions validate applicability approach. Nonetheless, our represents novel bio-based ecological engineering strategy enhancing structures.

Objective – This study was undertaken to analyze the relationship between perceived negative impacts on land reclamation (LR) and support for coastal ecotourism within fishing communities (CE), with environmental awareness (EA) as mediating variable. Methodology utilized a convenience sampling technique distribute questionnaires 400 domestic tourists in areas. Data analysis conducted using Hayes’s PROCESS IBM Statistical Package Social Science (SPSS v25.0). Findings Results showed that LR had direct effect CE [β= 0.183; 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.095–0.270; P= 0.000 <0.05]. Furthermore, statistically significant indirect via EA also observed (β= 0.269; CI =0.192–0.351; 0.000<0.05), indicating partial mediation. Novelty These findings highlight is important essential be promoted when considering sustainable development both communities. Affected communities, usually high awareness, will comprehend of developments react conserve environment. In this case, stakeholders are more inclined ecotourism, advocate conservation, preserve local cultures appreciation.
