Stable isotope analysis (SIA) is widely used to study trophic ecology and food webs in aquatic ecosystems. In the case of fish, muscle tissue generally preferred for SIA, method lethal most cases. We tested whether blood fin clips can be as non-lethal alternatives examining isotopic composition two freshwater predatory European catfish ( Silurus glanis ) Northern pike Esox lucius ), species high value many systems well invasive others. Blood samples from caudal vein, anal clips, dorsal obtained by biopsy punch were collected four populations (14–18 individuals per population). Subsequently, these analyzed δ 13 C 15 N. The effects alternative tissues, site, fish body mass on offset investigated. Both showed a correlation between type, but no significant relationship with mass. offsets tissues calculate conversion equations. results demonstrated that both are suitable less SIA studies focused pike. provided better correspondence values. However, our clearly vary significantly among same species. Therefore, obtaining several any population advisable gain initial insights establish possible population-specific inter-tissue conversion.

Invasive species pose a major threat to natural ecosystems and directly outcompete many native species, placing them at imminent of extinction. The topmouth gudgeon ( Pseudorasbora parva ) is on the EU’s blacklist invasive freshwater threatens biodiversity, especially in wetland floodplain ecosystems, aquacultures village ponds. crucian carp Carassius carassius Europe its populations have declined large part range, with gibel C. gibelio suspected as cause decline. Invasions by been implicated decline but this still needs be verified. aim study was evaluate experimental approach competitive interaction between two carp, focusing isotopic niche sizes their overlap syntopy. A four-month mesocosm experiment performed determine living alone Additionally, stable isotope data were collected sites where co-occur compare overlaps. Experimental showed that space responded more flexibly (reducing size syntopy) than confirmed high species. Field studies shown has invaded when another lived community (25% 40% ellipse area 50% 95% area). When only present field, lower (3% 48%, respectively) directional modelling likely invade vice versa. indicated competition likely, syntopy other This shows feeding plasticity facilitates establishment outside range and, due overlap, fish similar ecology displacement.
