urrent understanding of how calcifying organisms respond to externally forced oceanic and coastal acidification (OCA) is largely based on short-term, controlled laboratory or mesocosm experiments. Studies organismal responses (reduced carbonate saturation pH) in the wild, where animals simultaneously interact with a range biotic abiotic circumstances, are limited scope interpretation. The present study aimed better understand gastropod shell attributes their interrelations can inform about acidification. We investigated chemical erosion, roundness, growth rate Planaxis sulcatus snails, which locally exposed acidified non-acidified rocky intertidal water. tested new approach quantifying erosion spiral suture length (EI, index) found that mirrored field conditions. Exposure caused shells become rounder (width/length). Field rate, determined from apertural margin extension marked later recaptured was strongly negatively related both roundness. Since different indicative relationships-shell an extrinsic passive marker acidification, roundness intrinsic performance responders-analyzing imply causation, enhance predictive power, bolster interpretation confidence. This contributes methodology findings trait-based investigations
