A
heavily
impacted
river
basin
(Caudal
River,
NW
Spain)
by
Hg
and
Cu
mining
activities,
abandoned
decades
ago,
was
used
to
evaluate
the
environmental
quality
of
their
sediments.
The
obtained
results
compared
with
reference
values
established
US
EPA
Canadian
Council
Ministers
Environment
for
sediments,
have
shown
that
main
elements
concern
are
arsenic
(As),
mercury
(Hg)
and,
a
lesser
extent,
copper
(Cu),
which
reach
concentrations
up

that

Zn,
Pb
slightly
polluted,
Cu
Ni
moderately
polluted
region.
Potential
ecological
risk
(RI)
mean
possible
effect
level
(PEL)
quotient
conducted
risk.
RI
PEL
demonstrated
slight
risks
exhibited
a
21%
probability
toxicity.
Principal
component
analysis
(PCA)
combined
correlation
(CA)
hierarchical
cluster
(HAC)
revealed
contamination
might
originate
from
three
type
sources.
