A heavily impacted river basin (Caudal River, NW Spain) by Hg and Cu mining activities, abandoned decades ago, was used to evaluate the environmental quality of their sediments. The occurrence, multi-index assessment, and sources of heavy metals in surface sediments Zhelin Bay were investigated. Average metal concentrations (mg/kg) 81.89 (Cr), 770.76 (Mn), 16.81 (Co), 62.25 (Ni), 96.30 (Cu), 162.04 (Zn), 73.40 (Pb), with the studied seven being significantly higher than their corresponding background values. Geo-accumulation index (Igeo) pollution load (PLI) implemented to assess degree contamination. Igeo PLI indicated that Cr, Mn, Co, Zn, Pb slightly polluted, Cu Ni moderately polluted region. Potential ecological risk (RI) mean possible effect level (PEL) quotient conducted risk. RI PEL demonstrated slight risks exhibited a 21% probability toxicity. Principal component analysis (PCA) combined correlation (CA) hierarchical cluster (HAC) revealed contamination might originate from three type sources.
