As emerging contaminants, microplastic contamination of the coastal ecosystems is one world’s most pressing environmental concerns. Coastal sediments have been polluted to varying degrees by microplastics, and ubiquitous presence microplastics in poses a threat marine organisms. However, there currently no ecological risk assessment towards aquatic biota sediments. This study for first time established new procedure evaluate toxicity on based probabilistic (PRA) concept. The choice Zhelin Bay as case site was its severe pollution status. average content 21.71 items/10 g dry weight, these consisted 52 different species. Microplastics presented five forms, with film form being main composition, particle sizes ranging from 100-500 μm. Correlation analysis (CA) reveals that significant negative correlations were found between abundance, Al2O3 SiO2. PRA concept shows surface had low probability (3.48%) toxic effects biota.

Management of plastic litter in Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) is expensive but crucial to avoid harms critical environments. In the present work, an open-source numerical modelling chain proposed estimate seasonal pathways and fates macro-plastics, hence support effective planning implementation sea beach cleaning operations. The approach applied nearshore region that includes MPA Capo Milazzo (Italy). A sensitivity analysis on influence tides, wind, waves river floods over year indicates seasonality only slightly affects location extension macro-plastic accumulation zones, operations should be performed autumn. Instead, rivers distribution for optimal interventions coastal area.

Estuaries can act as plastic retention hotspots, but the hydrodynamic controls on are not well understood. This study investigates of river-sourced buoyant plastics in a well-mixed estuary, Waitematā Estuary, using validated numerical simulations floats with different tides, winds, and freshwater discharge. The proportion grounded shore all seven is higher than 60 % over 90 five after ten days. <20 leave estuarine mouth any simulations. An increase two orders magnitude discharge doubles likelihood for to reach lower estuary. However, we find increased lateral circulation towards results similar proportions grounding (90 %) low cases. These findings challenge conventional view that preferentially enter open ocean high river
