Medium-chain fatty acids (MCFAs) represent a promising form of energy recovered from waste activated sludge (WAS) through anaerobic fermentation. However, the low WAS degradability hindered MCFAs generation WAS. In this study, urine pretreatment 5 – 25 wt% was applied to enhance production in anerobic fermentation with ethanol as an electron donor. Urine (5 wt%) dose-dependently improved by 0.8 3.3 times (from 2.4 4.4 12.8 g chemical oxygen demand (COD)/L) and enhanced selectivity 3.5 12.2 % 21.4 54.4 %). degradation up 54.8 transfer efficiency substrates (i.e. ethanol) 18.6 %, which contributed improvement production. According model-based analysis, potential (Pm) rose 2.71 ± 0.09 COD/L 0 4.51 13.11 pretreatment, while lag phase (λ) decreased 5.30 d 4.67 3.08 d, may be reason for Additionally, significantly facilitated each step involved generation, i.e. solubilization, hydrolysis, acidification, chain elongation, 600 51 17 42 respectively.
