Microplastics (MPs) and nanoplastics (NPs) are pervasive environmental pollutants that commonly ingested by organisms at different trophic levels. While the effects of MPs on aquatic have been extensively studied, impacts MP ingestion host fitness terrestrial organisms, mainly insects, relatively unexplored. This study investigates NP survivorship reproduction 2 medically important mosquito species, Aedes aegypti Linnaeus (Diptera: Culicidae) albopictus Skuse Culicidae). Larval pupal Ae. were not significantly affected particle size or concentration, but there was a reduction associated with 0.03 µm NPs. In addition, little observed impact 1.0 adult survivorship, fecundity, longevity. To further investigate fitness, we also examined varying shape, size, plastic polymer type immature survivorship. The data suggest shape did These findings highlight understanding microplastic mosquitoes may be complicated composition, amount ingested.

In this historical context, the Mediterranean Sea faces an increasing threat from emerging pollutants such as pharmaceuticals, personal care products, heavy metals, pesticides and microplastics, which pose a serious risk to environment human health. regard, aquatic invertebrates fish are particularly vulnerable toxic effects of these pollutants, several species have been identified bio-indicators for their detection. Among these, bivalve molluscs elasmobranchs now widely used accurately assess contaminants. The study focuses on catshark Scyliorhinus canicular mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis. first one is useful indicator localised contamination levels due its exposure that accumulate seabed. Moreover, it has high trophic position plays important role in ecosystem. mollusc galloprovincialis, other hand, being filter-feeding organism, can acquire bioaccumulate foreign particles present environment. Among personal care products, quaternium-15 is prominently featured as a preservative in items such shampoos, soaps, shaving and cosmetics. The widespread use of these products people's daily routines contributes to release into aquatic ecosystems. In this context, the primary aim study was assess physiological cellular responses digestive gland gills Mytilus galloprovincialis exposure. Cell viability ability cells regulate their volume were evaluated. Additionally, expression genes involved oxidative stress response assessed further substantiate compound's harmful effects. Results indicated significant decrease both RVD (regulatory decrease) capacity when exposed hypotonic solution. Furthermore, impairment cell function corroborated by modulation stress-related gene expression, including SOD, Cat, well Hsp70 CYP4Y1. Similar alterations observed gills, reflecting impaired functionality vital organ well. summary, outcomes provide conclusive evidence toxicity quaternium-15. This underscores urgent need investigate toxicological effects contaminant on ecosystems emphasises necessity limiting containing

Pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) containing persistent potentially hazardous substances have garnered attention for their ubiquitous presence in natural environments. This study investigated the impact of polyethylene glycol (PEG), a common PPCP component, on Mytilus galloprovincialis. Mussels were subjected to two PEG concentrations (E1: 0.1 mg/L E2: 10 mg/L) over 14 days. Oxidative stress markers both gills digestive glands evaluated; cytotoxicity assays performed haemolymph gland cells. Additionally, cell volume regulation (RVD assay) was assess physiological PEG-induced alterations. In gills, reduced superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity increased lipid peroxidation (LPO) at E1. gland, only LPO influenced, while SOD oxidatively modified proteins (OMPs) unaltered. A significant decrease viability observed, particularly E2. RVD assay revealed disruptions cells These findings underscore effects exposure M. They are open further investigations clarify environmental implications PPCPs possibility exploring safer alternatives.

The main objective this was establish pipeline based on models extract data from raw images obtained by remotely operated towed vehicle (ROTV). Different object detection were evaluated compared various shelf zones at head submarine canyon systems metrics such as precision, recall, F1 score. best-performing model, YOLOv8, selected for generating maps high spatial resolution. also generated synthetic augment training assess generalization capacity proposed provides cost-effective non-invasive method monitoring assessing status these important reef-building their habitats. results have implications management protection habitat Spain other marine ecosystems worldwide. These highlight potential improve efficiency accuracy vulnerable ecosystems, allowing informed decisions be made that can positive impact conservation.

Natural wetlands, the transitional zones found between land and sea, are considered hot spots for plastic accumulation. Constructed wetlands (CW) attempt to mimic these natural in order provide potential Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) reducing microplastic (MP) contamination wastewater treatment plants, mitigating MP pollution rivers. In this work, role played by an interspersed lagoon surrounded aquatic vegetation (Juncus Maritimus) retaining was investigated using experimental laboratory simulations. Four types (125–500 μm 500–1000 PA fragments, 2 mm PET fibers 5 fibers) along with suspended sediments were injected into model wetland study their transport throughout system. Five different vegetated patch lengths surrounding (LP). Results showed that protected from fragments increasing dispersion of particle-laden flow consequently sedimentation. When use patches coupled lagoon, retention rates maximized (with total percentages 88 ± 3 % 99 1.5 fibers, respectively), suggesting CW a NBS trapping specific sources.
