This paper investigates the effects of fungicide azoxystrobin, a compound widely used in rice farming, on aquatic communities representative two habitats characteristic Mediterranean wetland ecosystems: water springs and eutrophic lake waters. The long-term azoxystrobin were evaluated several structural (phytoplankton, zooplankton, macroinvertebrate populations communities) functional (microbial decomposition, macrophyte periphyton growth) parameters making use freshwater mesocosms. Azoxystrobin was applied pulses 2, 20, 200 µg/L separated by 14 d using commercial product ORTIVA (23% w/w). results show that these responded differently to application due their distinct physico-chemical, functional, characteristics. Although overall sensitivity found be similar between (lowest NOEC < 2 µg/L), taxa processes affected differed substantially. In general, most sensitive species spring mesocosms, with some phytoplankton (Nitzschia sp.) or macrocrustaceans (Echinogammarus sp. Dugastella valentina) being significantly at µg/L. (Desmodesmus Coelastrum sp.), numerous zooplankton taxa, chironomids beetle Colymbetes fuscus, although higher concentrations. hemipteran Micronecta scholtzi both treatments. addition, such as organic matter decomposition growth also relatively low concentrations (NOEC µg/L). Structural Equation Modelling shed light indirect caused ecosystem. These is likely pose ecosystems environmentally relevant Moreover, it highlights need consider habitat-specific features when conducting ecotoxicological research population community levels.

Temperature-dependent chemical toxicity has become a crucial issue taking into consideration that lakes, especially shallow waterbodies, are impacted by climate change worldwide. In this study, we looking for an answer to what extent standard ecotoxicity assays being performed under constant and relatively low temperatures capable of predicting the risk posed pesticides. Lemna minor test plants were exposed glyphosate in concentrations range 25, 50, 100, 200, 400 μg/L at 10, 15, 20, 30, 35 °C. Two peaks appeared when growth inhibition was assessed; lower elucidated higher inhibition, 20 °C, while found temperature 30 The toxic effect experienced °C indicates reported PNEC values cannot be sufficient protect non-target aquatic species certain environmental scenarios. addition phytotoxicity also assessed based on peroxidase (POD) concentrations. general, POD showed greater sensitivity, already showing response lowest tested, 10 Decreased activity detected 10–30 most probably indicating damage cell plasma membranes.

Aquatic ecosystems face significant impacts from human-related stressors, demanding a deep understanding of their dynamics and interactions for effective management restoration. The Albufera Lake (Valencia, Spain) presents complex scenario multiple interacting stressors affecting its eutrophic status. In this study, we compiled 50-year dataset used Generalized Additive Models (GAMs) to analyse the main ecological status Lake. Then, assessed individual combined effects on eutrophication using chlorophyll-a concentration as proxy provided recommendations enhance water quality. Overall, found decrease in annual inflow clear effect rice cultivation seasonal patterns Lake's residence time. Our analysis also shows an increase average temperature 2 °C last 50 years, frequency severity heat waves. contrast, slightly negative long-term trend conductivity, despite occurrence peaks summer. Regarding nutrients, identified reduction total phosphorus (from 1.08 mg/L 1987 0.20 2022), while nitrate concentrations have been rather stable. results point at toxic pressure exerted by organic inorganic contaminants during with toxicity occurring field drainage periods. levels were be temperature, scarcity, well between conductivity nitrate, phosphorus. We that stressor are highly dynamic result synergistic antagonistic vary according different levels. Finally, our GAM framework points two potential scenarios: increasing freshwater inflows or deregulating hydrology allow seawater exchange, which key improving short-term.
