Biosolids as by-products of wastewater treatment can contain a large spectrum pathogens and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). Insect-based bioconversion using black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) is an emerging technology that has shown to reduce significant amounts biosolids quickly produce biomass containing low heavy metal concentrations. However, the best our knowledge, this first study investigating transfer ARGs from into process' end-products, BSFL frass. We hypothesized BSF-based decrease abundance pathogenic bacteria in biosolids. In study, we performed feeding trials with blended or not wheat bran, bran alone bioburden diet (control). conducted 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing monitor changes BSFL-associated microbial community fate biosolids-associated pathogens. A diverse set (ermB, intl1, sul1, tetA, tetQ, tetW, blaCTX-M-32) were quantified by qPCR linked substrate- microbiomes. biosolids-containing substrates led reduction diversity, several investigated (< 99 %). Feeding high biosolid resulted higher accumulation BSFL. Results demonstrated be suitable waste management (1) (2) presence ARGs. resulting would need undergo further post-treatment load allow them animal feed.

The increasing prevalence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) from animal manure has raised concerns about the potential threats to public health. bioconversion with insect larvae, such as black soldier fly larvae (BSFL, Hermetia illucens [L.]), is a promising technology for quickly attenuating ARB while also recycling waste. In this study, we investigated BSFL conversion systems chicken manure. Using metagenomic analysis, tracked and evaluated resistome dissemination risk by investigating co-occurrence antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), mobile genetic elements (MGEs), bacterial taxa in context. Our results indicated that treatment effectively mitigated relative abundance ARB, ARGs, MGEs 34.9%, 53.3%, 37.9%, respectively, within 28 days. Notably, transferable ARGs decreased 30.9%, indicating could mitigate likelihood ARG horizontal transfer thus reduce occurrence. addition, significantly positive correlation links between antimicrobial concentration reduced 44.4%. Moreover, using variance partition analysis (VPA), identified other most important factor influencing explaining 20.6% patterns. Further suggested antagonism on increased 1.4 times, nutrient competition both total nitrogen crude fat 2.8 times. Overall, these findings provide insight into mechanistic understanding reduction during strategy rapidly mitigating

Antibiotic resistance in soil introduced by organic fertilizer application pose a globally recognized threat to human health. Insect may be promising alternative due its low antibiotic resistance. However, it is not yet clear how regulate microbes reduce agricultural application. In this study, we investigated and resistome under black soldier fly (BOF) pot field systems. Our study shows that BOF could stimulate ARB (antibiotic resistant − bacteria) suppressive Bacillaceae the microbiome resistome. The carbohydrate transport metabolism pathway of was strengthened, which accelerated synthesis polysaccharides form biofilm antagonistic ARB, thus reduced We further tested Bacillus spp. microcosm assay, resulted significant decrease presence ARGs together with higher abundance key formation gene (epsA). This knowledge might help development more efficient bio-fertilizers aimed at mitigating enhancing health, particular, requirements global "One Health".
