This study investigates the occurrence and characteristics of macroplastic polymer microparticles in Urias coastal lagoon’s beach sediments, northwest Mexico. Coastal lagoons, productive vulnerable ecosystems, are impacted significantly by anthropogenic activities, leadings to their pollution various contaminants, including plastics. Our research involved sampling sediments from four sites within lagoon that were influenced different human activities such as fishing, aquaculture, thermoelectric power plant operations, industrial domestic wastewater discharge. methodology included collecting macroplastics sediment samples, followed laboratory analyses identify plastic debris’ size, shape, color, chemical composition. The results indicated a notable presence items (144), predominantly bags, styrofoam, caps made polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), terephthalate (PET). mainly fibers, with cotton polyester most common polymers, suggesting significant contribution clothing-related waste. dominant colors blue transparent. High densities observed areas slower water exchange. findings highlight urgent need for better waste management practices mitigate preserving ecological economic functions.

Abstract Coastal ecosystems with karstic geology have a unique characteristic where the dissolution of carbonate rocks can increase total alkalinity (TA) and dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC). This results in higher budgets coastal areas. One such ecosystem is Terminos Lagoon, most extensive tropical estuarine lagoon system Mexico, located aquifer Yucatan Peninsula connected to southern Gulf Mexico (sGoM). We measured TA DIC evaluate variability Lagoon’s system. also estimated pH, partial CO 2 pressure (pCO ), aragonite saturation (Ω Ar ) along two transects from main tributaries (Palizada Candelaria rivers) zone during dry rainy seasons. During season, concentrations were significantly (3092 ± 452 µmol kg -1 TA, 2943 522 DIC) than season (2533 228 −1 2492 259 ). Our calculations indicate that pCO (2532 2371 µatm) seems (1534 1192 µatm). leads reduction pH (7.9 0.3 7.8 0.3). These significant changes rain increases flow unsaturated river water into lagoon. The this work contribute toward baseline sGoM be helpful Lagoon decision-makers.

This study evaluated the ingestion of microplastics (MP) by copepods in Terminos Lagoon (TL), a RAMSAR-listed site southern Gulf Mexico. The evaluation was carried out two contrasting seasons 2022, as follows: dry (April) and rainy (October). Copepods were collected using conical plankton net (mesh size 200 μm). In laboratory, pool all pelagic adult copepod taxa picked, MP inside organisms extracted, classified, photographed traditional optical scanning electron microscopy. A total 268 particles extracted from interior copepods; among them, 149 119 corresponded to seasons, respectively. rate season 0.14, while season, it 0.11. addition, fibers, plastic fragments, microspheres with different colors (blue, red, black, green, transparent, multicolored), sizes, forms (angular, round, triangular, twisted), textures also detected. Fibers most abundant found proportion more than 85%. some sampling sites, observed high relative abundance values (80%). fragments reach 20% abundance. Significant differences between seasons. sites closest urban area adjacent TL diversity MP. higher is due lower river discharge, on other hand. Lagoons are ecosystems for biodiversity and the livelihoods of coastal communities. The main objective study was to analyze variability arsenic concentrations in gastropods bivalves Aby Tendo lagoons, taking into account spatial, seasonal hydrological variations. carried out four stages spread over two successive hydroclimatic cycles, including seasons during rainy season more dry season. samples were taken areas lagoons. Microplastics (MPs) are considered pollutants of emerging concern. In rivers, MPs (≤5 mm) transported by currents and deposited in lakes, reservoirs, estuaries, oceans. Mexico, freshwater ecosystems have been scarcely studied. This work aimed to determine the presence rivers Sierra Gorda Biosphere Reserve (SGBR). Samples surface water sediment collected from Escanela, Jalpan, Ayutla, Santa María were processed. extracted direct filtration using nitrocellulose filters with a 1.2 μm pore size; sediments density suspension ZnCl 2 solution (ρ ≈ 1.5 g/cm 3 ). The was examined SEM-EDX, spectra trace elements on obtained; additionally, MP polymers characterized FTIR. Fibers most abundant forms both matrices. Up 110.87 items L −1 detected 175 kg (dry weight) sediments. Surface wear observed, detected, including Al, Fe, Cr, Si, Zn, among others. identified samples polyethylene terephthalate, polyester, polypropylene, high-density polyethylene, polyamide, polystyrene. test results revealed metals their SGBR, which may be related mining operations study area, changes land use, wastewater discharges, atmospheric transport, dry wet deposition.
