Perfluorononanoic acid (PFNA), widely employed in surfactants, coatings, plastics, corrosion inhibitors, and fire-extinguishing agents, is less regulated than PFOS or PFOA but displays higher bioaccumulation potential toxicity. Most toxicity assessments have focused on mammals, fish, algae, with limited research ground-dwelling arthropods, especially ants. Here, we examined PFNA's toxic effects red imported fire ants (RIFAs), a prevalent species South China. Stomach contact experiments revealed that PFNA significantly reduced RIFA viability, poisoning severity correlating positively both dose exposure duration. inhibited key behaviors-including aggregation, climbing, grasping, crawling, excavation-and impacted survival. For instance, after 12 hours at 0.12 mg/g PFNA, large medium workers excavated only 0.136 g 0.064 of quartz sand, respectively, controls. Lethal concentrations (LC50) decreased over time, falling to 53.089 mg/L by day 7. Moreover, exhibited sublethal curtailing feeding raising mortality rates; 100 500 treatments, cumulative reached 30.70 % 53.60 %, 15. The group also showed consumption sugar water locusts from 12-20. Elevated superoxide dismutase (SOD) catalase (CAT) activities indicated oxidative stress RIFAs. Collectively, these findings demonstrate concentration-dependent repellent RIFAs, emphasizing the need for further arthropods RIFAs as bioassay pollutant assessment.
