Abstract The application of hydrochar as a cost-effective solution has received much attention for the remediation contaminated water. An economical and environmental approach to enhancing physicochemical adsorption performance is essential. In this study, green technology ball-milling was firstly employed improve capacity typical antibiotics norfloxacin. Aqueous batch experiment using both pristine ball milled derived from water hyacinth, prepared by hydrothermal carbonization at three temperatures (180, 200, 220 °C) conducted. results showed that decreased specific surface area hydrochar, but still greatly enhanced their on Surface functional groups, aromatization degree, hydrophobicity were increased after ball-milling, evidenced measurements Boehm titration, Raman spectra, contact angle, respectively. With these changes, all ball-milled hyacinth exhibited better norfloxacin than hydrochar. Ball-milled °C greatest (68.53 mg g −1 ) compared unmilled (24.29 ), enhancement effective in wide pH range (5–9) aqueous solutions. thermodynamics study indicated physically spontaneous exothermic. Combined characterization suggest owing boosting H-bonds, π-π electron-donor–acceptor, hydrophobic interaction. This suggested can be served facile, green, method obtain modified removal pollutants
