Wetlands are habitats that provide numerous ecosystem services, but often understudied and threatened by anthropogenic pollution, particularly plastic pollution. Macroplastics a significant component of litter have high biological impacts understudied. Previous studies highlighted negative on biota, there is lack information about the communities micro macro organisms settle macroplastic litter. In this context, we investigated colonization patterns community structures diatoms macroinvertebrates virgin substrates composed two different polymers, polystyrene polyethylene (PET), located at depths in protected wetland Central Italy over period 10 months. The results show diatom not highly structured competitive forces aggregation emerges. contrast, macroinvertebrate appears to be randomly structured, without presence following specific assembly rules. Randomness assemblages could highlight niches available for settlement taxa. Combined matrix analyses co-occur, their sometimes while they appeared assembled other times. Whenever non-randomness co-occurrences was detected, it suggested aggregation. Moreover, possible predatory relationship between taxa should investigated, as reveal important scenarios establishment litter, including exploit ecological niches. This lead an enrichment within areas impacted plastics.

Plastics in aquatic ecosystems rapidly undergo biofouling, giving rise to a new ecosystem on their surface, the 'plastisphere.' Few studies quantify impact of plastics and associated community traits from biodiversity functional metabolic function. It has been suspected that impacts may depend its state but comparative responses are rare published literature. We quantified algal biomass, bacterial (16S 18S rRNA), growing surface different plastic polymers incubated within rivers Lower Mekong Basin. The selected have ecological characteristics similar regarding high degree pollution. examined effects colonized with biofilms production, dark respiration, epiplastic community's capability influence nitrogen, phosphorus, organic carbon, oxygen water. Finally, we present conceptual models guide our understanding pollution freshwaters. Our findings showed limited microalgal biomass dominance, potential pathogens present. location significantly influenced composition, highlighting role environmental conditions shaping development. When assessing productivity, experiments biofouled led significant drop concentration river water, leading hypoxic/anoxic subsequent profound system metabolism influencing biogeochemical cycles. Scaling revealed exert more substantial ecosystem-altering than initially assumed, particularly areas poorly managed waste. These results highlighted plastisphere functions as habitat for biologically active organisms which play pivotal essential processes. This warrants dedicated attention investigation, sensitive like River, supports rich livelihoods 65 million people.

Freshwater macroinvertebrates, often used as indicators of environmental quality for freshwater ecosystems, may be compromised by microplastics (MPs). We investigated MPs occurring in benthic filter feeder, predator, and grazer macroinvertebrates collected from the catchment-independent but adjacent Olifants Sabie rivers Kruger National Park duplicates. counted 369 376 organisms (1.0 n/organism) with a mean 8.8 n/organism, 8.5 0.16 n/organism feeders, predators, grazers, respectively. Based on MP colour, size, morphotype, significant differences proportional compositions between predatorial all other both preclude proxy indicator macroinvertebrates. Proportional characteristics differed respects two rivers, except one aspect. Microplastic morphotypes occurred equal proportions suggesting biological selection based morphotype not colour or size. found little evidence trophic transfer feeding guilds. Of six polymer types observed (n = 50), butyl chlorobutyl dominated. Waste mismanagement, single-use plastics, inefficient wastewater treatment plants, mining, road transportation major pollution sources that need mitigation. Microplastics ecosystems nature conservation areas more attention due to high biodiversity exposed.
