The growing threats posed by wildfires in Southern Europe are calling for the development of comprehensive and sound management risk assessment strategies. In this work, we present application wildfire simulation modeling based on minimum travel time (MTT) algorithm to assess fine-scale (100-m resolution) hazard, transmission, exposure communities Italy-France Maritime cooperation area (Sardinia, Corsica, Tuscany, Liguria Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur), which cover about 72,000 km 2 land. We simulated thousands considering current landscape characterized measured factors profiles taking into account historical fire regimes, fuels, winds fuel moisture conditions associated with occurrence largest (>100 ha) that affected study last 20 years. Individual fires were at 100-m resolution, consistent input files. Modeled annual burn probability ignition revealed Sardinia was Region most wildfires. outputs then combined main land uses building footprint locations characterize transmission communities, summarized vegetation types Regions. This presents a cross-boundary standardized approach spread analyze quantify Europe. stochastic systems implemented used harmonized sets data vast, fire-prone Mediterranean area, where previous similar studies conducted coarser resolutions covered lower extent lands. presented work can be as reference pillar implementation common monitoring, management, governance plan area. methods findings replicated neighboring other regions threatened

Managing wildfires in Italy: overcoming the emergency, planning preventionWildfires represent a critical environmental and social challenge, with longterm implications for human health, ecosystems, infrastructure. This complex issue is exacerbated by various factors, including socioeconomic changes, unsustainable practices agro-forestry land management, intensification of extreme weather events. The complexity fire management Italy necessitates effective governance mechanisms tools at both regional national levels. This study looks successful prevention strategies, such as prescribed burning proactive while also addressing existing challenges, coordination among relevant institutions need stronger regulatory frameworks. In addition to providing insights into current state proposing practical solutions, we suggest that more resilient sustainable practices, already successfully implemented some regions, should be adopted nationwide Italy.

As socio-natural phenomena, wildfires are exacerbated by climate change and socioeconomic dynamics. However, the role of uncertainty in shaping future wildfire risk management remains largely neglected. Building on notion that emerges at intersection hazard, exposure vulnerability, we conduct an integrative literature review to identify most significant drivers European geographical institutional context bring this together with Shared Socioeconomic Pathways (SSP) perspectives plausible To our knowledge, is first study bridge gap between research scenarios establish a conceptual understanding risk. The resulting scenario space has two main applications: (i) it acts as qualitative navigator for factoring model-based assessments, (ii) sets boundary conditions evaluating feasibility strategies. Sustainable land use practices profitable agricultural value chains can reduce (e.g. SSP1), whereas degradation SSP4), disparities SSP3) may increase it. result, challenges differ significantly across scenarios, leading paradoxical situations. In where vulnerability reduction potential lower risk, implementing necessary measures achieve reduction. Similar dilemmas arise hazard exposure. By considering multiple futures, paper emphasizes importance accounting dynamics keeping design strategies open flexible face changing circumstances.

Rural and forest fires represent one of the most significant sources emissions in atmosphere trace gases aerosol particles, which significantly impact carbon budget, air quality, human health. This paper aims to illustrate an integrated modelling approach combining spatial non-spatial inputs provide enhance estimation GHG particulate matter from surface using Italy as a case study over period 2007-2017. Three main improvements characterize proposed this work: (i) collection development comprehensive accurate data related burned area; (ii) use recent on fuel type load; (iii) application estimate moisture, burning efficiency, consumption considering meteorological factors combustion phases. On average, Italy's were 2,621 Gg yr-1, ranging minimum 772 yr-1 2013 maximum 7,020 2007. Emissions fire disturbances broadleaf forests, shrublands, agricultural types account for about 76% total. Results compared with global national inventories showing good agreement, especially CO2 matter. The study's reduces uncertainties emission estimates, results can be utilized decision support systems address quality management impacts mitigation policies.
