The global generation of bauxite residue necessitates environmentally responsible disposal strategies. This study investigated the long-term (5-year) behavior whose pH was lowered to 8.5, called modified (MBR), using lysimeters test various configurations: raw MBR or used (UMBR) previously applied for acid mine drainage remediation, sand soil capping, and revegetation. Throughout experiment across all configurations, leachates stabilized between 7 8 their salinity decreased. Their low sodium absorption ratio (SAR) indicated minimal risk material clogging suitability salt-tolerant plant growth. Leaching potentially toxic elements, except vanadium, decreased rapidly after first year levels. Leachate concentrations consistently remained below LD50 Hyalella azteca were at least an order magnitude lower by experiment’s end, first-year chromium. Sand capping performed poorly, while revegetation slightly increased leaching, though these negligible given final leaching Revegetated shows promise as a suitable sustainable solution managing residues, provided is maintained above 6.5. highlights importance assessments appropriate management strategies disposal.

Riparian zones maintain biodiversity, cyclic nutrients, and regulate water quality. However, their stability is increasingly threatened by human activities such as dam construction climate variability. This study focuses on the riparian of Three Gorges Dam Reservoir (TGDR), a region marked fluctuating levels subtropical southeast monsoon climate. We investigated seasonal vegetation-specific dynamics soil properties microbial communities in dominated artificially remediated plants (ARPs) TGDR. The selected ARP species included herbaceous Cynodon dactylon (CD) Hemarthria altissima (HA), known for capacity rapid stabilization, tree Salix matsudana (SM) Taxodium distichum (TD), which enhance nutrient cycling through litter inputs root exudates. These were evaluated across spring (T1), summer (T2), autumn (T3). Our analysis 360 samples led to generation high-quality sequences that provided insights into diversity. Principal component identified organic matter, ammonium nitrogen, total nitrogen main contributors property variance, explaining 53.68% T1, 51.52% T2, 56.37% T3 variance (p < 0.01). Correlation highlighted positive relationship between pH Nitrospirae (r = 0.603) Proteobacteria 0.558). Enzyme activity varied season, with acid phosphatase peaking invertase highest T1. also made functional predictions pathways pertinent metabolism, genetic information processing, environmental signal transduction. There shifts metabolic pathways, an increase carbohydrate metabolism via TD. In addition, there was rise amino CD. assessment diversity uncovered 68 bacterial phyla, Acidobacteria emerging dominant taxa. results indicate ARPs positively influence health, cycling, overall ecosystem integrity. findings hold significant implications restoration regions experiencing changes.

Microbially driven aggregate formation plays a sustainable role during the soil process in bauxite residue, which may realize large-scale treatment of typical alkaline solid waste. However, potential mechanisms microbial metabolites on organic–alkaline mineral complexes and stable aggregates are usually neglected. Here, we developed novel microbially strategy to improve enhance ecological service resilience by inoculation Penicillium oxalicum (P. oxalicum, an alkali-tolerant acid-producing fungi). The intensive application P. reduced contents electrical conductivity (EC) exchangeable sodium percentage (ESP) while increasing proportions macroaggregates microaggregates residue compared chemical amendments. Furthermore, even inoculated with same dose multiple inoculations achieved higher extracellular metabolic activity than single inoculation. Simultaneously, guided oligotrophic-dominated assemblages (including Actinobacteria, Proteobacteria, Ascomycota members) increased network complexity. spectroscopic analysis demonstrated that polymeric substances (EPSs) promoted due high adsorptive functional groups (e.g., −OH, −COOH, N–H). existence hydrogen bonds led viscosity exhibition through binding effects polysaccharides minerals sodalite, cancrinite). findings enhanced understanding EPSs stabilization rehabilitation residue.

Recycling of red mud (RM) has posed an enduring challenge for the alumina industry. This work offers a comprehensive investigation into fundamental and applied research RM blend iron ore sintering process. Microsintering test was employed to investigate formation properties bonding phase affected by RM. It resulted in impairment infiltration onto surface decrease interfacial strength. The interaction mechanism showed that excessive TiO2 Al2O3 brought leads transformation calcium ferrite (the target phase) perovskite spinel with high melting points, resulting evolution from original dense strip-crystallized structure fine-grained porous. Abstract Aims This study investigated a 7 yr old rehabilitated grassland established on bauxite residue storage areas(RSA) in order to assess the availability and ecosystem transfer of both nutrient trace elements, determine if defined rehabilitation criteria were sustained. Methods Rehabilitated residue/soil was sampled over depth (0–10 10-20 cm) season (Spring/Summer Autumn/Winter) plant growth stage (green vs. senescent) essential non-essential element (Ca, Mg, Na, Al V) content. Invertebrates samples from decomposer predator specimens assessed foodchain occurred. Results Residue-soil results showed sustained with pH, EC ESP all within recommended levels. Further, bioavailable fractions V remained low. Vegetation analysis revealed seasonal variation for elements highlights need wider monitoring parameters. Elemental content invertebrate did not indicate comparable reference site. Conclusion show low bioavailability transfer.
